That's because the Chinese can now afford to buy the Japanese motorcycles because they have sold so many of their crappy scooters to the USA.

Demand in the US is down. In other parts of the world where a motorcycle is actually used for transportation, my guess is demand is UP and folks are buying bikes as they can't afford (either the cost or the fuel) a car.
