A couple months ago, I traded my SV650S for Christian's 97 TL1000S. This is how I received the bike:
Ever since owning my Z1000, I just can't get over the comfort of the standard seating position over the sport position, so I'm in the process of doing a standard conversion while retaining the naked look.
I also need a few odds and ends to make it street legal.
Lastly, I'll be touching it up with a few visual mods, like powdercoated wheels and tidbits.
This is after adding a Renthal Streetfigher bar, Outlaw 2" risers, and Pazzo levers.
Adding the bars made the stock location of the cluster way too far away, so I put together a bracket to raise the cluster and pull it closer to the forks. Unfortunately this had the effect of making the headlights look way too low, so I also built a bracket out of aluminum to raise the lights slightly.
Still need a pic of this, though.
Now I'm in the process of working on a flyscreen. I acquired a windscreen from my father-in-laws snowmobile that I cut up, and now am in the process of fabbing up more brackets to mount it too. This is what it will look like soon (before paint). You can also see the awesome turn signal brackets I made out of Home Depot L-Brackets.
More progress soon.

I can resist everything but Pete's mom.

Nice! The flyscreen makes it look like a triumph.

Keep us posted! Looks like a great start...!
I once fabricated an alumunum bracket for a lap timer on my track bike. 1 piece 1.5 x 3 aluminum (precut at home depot) 4 holes drilled (by me) 2 zip ties (by me). velcro (by me).
I was very proud of myself....I was a handy man!

This is what I'm working with currently. This weekend I'll be mounting the flyscreen.
Here's a pic of how the cluster moved closer to the forks.

I finally got some spare time to mount this flyscreen. It was a real pain in the ass finding a way to mount it straight since the stock cluster on the TLS has non-symmetric mounting points, but I got it as close as I possibly could.
All in all, I think it turned out pretty good though.
This afternoon I'll be painting it red to match.
I also just found out that my wheels will fit in my dad's powdercoating oven, so I'm going to PC those sometime in May when I get my new tires.

Looks good but I would mount the turn signals to the forks where the bottom triple punch bolts are so folks can see them.
I would wheelie that thing everywhere. That TL will rip a wheelie 3rd gear on the highway for miles no problem.
I miss my Superhawk. RIP Superhawk.

I thought about moving the signals, but thought it would look kind of weird. I figured that the S3 has them mounted in roughly the same spot so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.
And yes, this thing LOVES to wheelie. I was on a really hilly road today and every time I crested a hill, a small snap of the throttle would pop the wheel up on command.

Painted my flyscreen! It doesn't look excellent by any means, there was too much moisture in the air yesterday so I need to sand the clear, reapply it and then buff it, but it gives you an idea of what it looks like. Not bad!

Looks great, are you on TLplanet.com yet? A ton of TL knowledgeable TL guys, great for troubleshooting and finding parts too
Friend: man riding this really hurts my balls
Me: Well you're not supposed to sit on your balls!
Be mindful of the 97's plastic clutch cover, I love the TL's!

Looking good! Sorry for the delay with getting the seat hump to you. If you can see about pming me your address I will ask my friend to mail it to you. Nice job with the bike I love the look of the fly screen and how it resembles a triumph.

The bike has been stripped.
Wheels are at the powdercoater as we speak, seat is going to be going out for refoaming and reupholstering pretty soon (once I get my cover from Sargent), and I will be replacing the rear shock, rotary damper, chain and sprockets with newer replacements.
I also made a new bracket for the headlights so the cutoff is correct. The lights sit a bit lower and closer to the forks, but I think it looks better overall.

Looks great. Still miss my old TLR
Well I got my wheels back from the powdercoater. They're definitely not the color I was hoping for...in the shade they look a flat mustard color, imo kind of blah. But in the sun they sparkle like I wanted, so I guess I'll give them a shot. Maybe when I mount the tires and reinstall the wheels on the bike, they'll look 10x better with the contrast...I can only hope anyways.
It was hard to get a good pic of the color with my cellphone cam, but this is the best I could do (ran outta sunlight). They look WAY more yellow in this pic than they do in person (by contrast my car is dark metallic, so you can see how washed out the pic is).

Finally got all the parts and pieces together to reassemble the TLS. Gold PC'ed wheels with new Pirelli Angel ST's, fresh spring/damper combo, refoamed and recovered front and pillion seats, and the TRE hooked up.
Here it sits so far:
All I have left now is a bit more welding on the cluster bracket (parts of the weld broke when I was adjusting it), and eventually a fresh chain and sprockets.

It's been a long time since I bumped this thread, but since we're now in winter this would be a good time to update.
I finished the bike to my satisfaction for riding this last summer, this is how it turned out:
A question: has anyone ever done wheel swaps? I have this crazy idea of swapping with a set of Ducati Marchesini's off a 749-999, but I have no idea of how difficult this might be. Anyone familiar with this process?
I'm also considering a possible tail swap, but that might be a bit more involved.
