    Question Newbies w/ literbikes...

Aight.... i'm sick & tired of hearing about newbies going out & getting a literbike or even a spankin new 600 super sport for his/her first bike, either cuz of the "i want it & you can't do anything to stop me" mentality, or the Dealerships pushing them to get something bigger cuz "you'll get bored after a month on that 110hp 600 SS... it's slow"

Does anyone else here think that it should be unlawful to sell something like... oh, i dunno.... an '05 R1 to Stupidhawk007's cousin who's new to riding?

I almost wanna send a letter to Congressman or someone that can get some kinda legislation rolling on this. What they have in Europe is a little TOO conservative from what I recall, but it's my opinion that something along those lines would seriously help the image of sportriding over here in the States.

    anybody w/ me?

I know, you're right - but as you know, it's even worse in GA with people with the bucks thinking they can jump right into turbines and go...I would think you'd see something being done there before you ever see any legislation on bikes...

who's jumpin into turbines w/o the proper ratings? I think the FAA has a MUCH better control over it's licensing regulations than the DOT has over theirs.

EDIT: I also think that if there are people doing what you say, they're probably not 18-25 year olds w/o any common sense.... they're rich 40 year olds that SHOULD have common sense.

in addition, which recreation do you think has more negative press? flying or motorcycling?

I'm talking the likes of the JFK Jr. incident. Yeah, you gotta have the ratings at least, but a lot of people without sufficient time are going out and buying planes they can't handle. My last boss bought a PC12 with only 1000 hours under his belt. His friend also bought one - perhaps you saw it on the news a while back - N770G - crashed in PA.

We have the same trouble in skydiving - newbies buy 120 square foot super high performance canopies and hook turn themselves into the ground on the first jump on it - gives skydiving a bad rap too.

I dunno - I agree with you, but I think people who make bad decisions are always gonna find a way to fuck it up for everyone.

are you saying that, in general, people choose advanced equipment without the proper training and skillset, no matter the activity?

clearly, i must ponder this strange, new phenomenon.

    man, i hate people

ok, which would you guys rather have.... laws against aftermarket exhausts, or laws against a 16 year old buying a hyabusa?

    Newbies w/ literbikes...

i'm not saying make it illegal for a newbie to get anything bigger than a 250, i'm saying that someone w/ a year or less experience shouldn't be able to get somethin like a GSX-R 1000, ZX-10R or, CBR-1000RR or R1. you guys don't agree?

can the same kid kill themselves on a 600? yeah, absolutely, but it takes a little more effort and they might actaully learn how to ride a bike on a 600 before it scares the fuck out of em or worse.

i think we of all people know what a literbike is capable of, and what something w/ less power can & can't do. i'm kinda suprised that there hasn't been any kinda support for something like this.

we can either let newbies continue to kill themselves on 1000cc bikes, raise our insurance rates & kill any possibility of the sportbiking community having a decent view in the general public, or we can do something about it, save some money & maybe gain a little respect in the public's eye.

we all bitch about how much bad press we get and how our insurance rates go up cuz some asshat w/ no training got in over his head & cut himself in half w/ a telephone poll... why not support something that would do something about it?

(btw, Rhonda... i just looked it up... GA accidents are down, motorcycling accidents are way up)

stop crying Pete. If someone wants to buy a liter bike, nothing should stand in their way. I don't think its a good idea for a new rider to buy a liter bike, but its their decision, not yours or mine.
