There was a real story on Top Gear though.. this guy in the UK started assembling a V-8 in his kitchen much to his wives dismay. Eventually he had the whole race car built in the kitchen with no way to get it out... so he invited top gear over to film him demolishing the back side of the house and driving the car out!

+1 on the urban legend angle. Gasoline won't burn, the fumes do. I seem to remember a race weekend many, many moons ago (before the majority of you even thought of racing-back when TONY was racing even!) that this theory was proven. None the less, I've heard many a variations of this story...
I think that mythbusters tackled this urban legend and busted it. The only way they got the toilet to explode was with some kind of explosive.
