Ducati 1098 and 848 RecallDucati has issued a recall for Ducati 1098 and 848 models for a charging system problem. Please read below for the specific models and details.
Manufacturer: Ducati
Models affected:
2007-2008 Ducati 1098
2007-2008 Ducati 1098 Tricolore
2008-2009 Ducati 1098R
2007-2008 Ducati 1098S
2008-2009 Ducati 848
NHTSA Campaign Number: 08V638000
Potential Units Affected: 7130
Problem: Ducati is recalling 7,130 model year 2007-2008 1098, 1098S, 1098 Tricolore, 1098R, and model year 2008-2009 848 motorcycles. The motorcycle charging system may be adversely affected by engine heat and stop operating. This results in damage to the voltage regulator and ensuing battery discharge. This can result in damage to the motorcycle and a potential hazard to the rider, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective Action: Dealers will replace the voltage regulator, install a heat guard between the voltage regulator and the engine exhaust system, and install a modified battery support. The recall is expected to begin during December 2008. Owners may contact Ducati at 1-800-231-6696.

Eh... Recalls are a normal part of the industry. It happens. It doesn't mean that it's not a quality product. Something is wrong, the manufacturer corrects it, at no cost to the customer...

At least there's a posted public recall.
There are certain manufacturers Yamaha who manage to dance around recalls by fudging certain paperworks and/ or ignoring an issue altogether, possibly offering a partial fix BMW in which the customer pays out of pocket for repairs or upgrades to the defective component. Rather than make things correct, they'd assume just piss a bunch of people off and run their customers to the brink Suzuki of switching to another brand, at which point the OEM casts their bait and reels 'em back in.
Hasn't Ducati had previous problems with the charging system?
Edit: On older models?
I'm surprised you didn't take the opportunity to take a cheap shot at Ducati. Hey everyone, I think out little Noel is growing up
The pre-2K Superbikes definitely had a charging problem. Sounds like the one on the 1098/848 is a little worse though. The older problem was corrosion on a plug under the battery from the stator. Probably wouldn't have been that bad if they used the thicker wires and a stator that wasn't just barely adequate they should have used in the first place![]()

You could always just go to a good shop in the first place... Seacoast replaced my regulator before I ever took delivery of the bike.
It wasn't a specification thing... a new supplier effed up, which sometimes happens when you're looking for cost reduction in the manufacturing process. Like the flaking rockers, they eventually had to take those in-house to make sure it was done right...
People complaining w/o the slightest clue of the design, engineering, testing, and manufacturing process should really just... ah never mind.
ugghh
I'm glad they are fixing the problem, but VT sucks, we do not have a Ducati dealership to do this recall work.
So, Looks like road trip to BCM in the early spring to get this done.
Why not just drop it at BCM when you go to pick it up?

Sounds like Duc's going to get more obnoxious about warranties, I guess all work has to be pre-approved by corporate now instead of dealer discretion?
Just got my recall letter. Its about friggen time the made an official campaign on this. I spent 1/2 the damned summer with no bike waiting for Ducati to produce a replacement regulator!!!
Of course now I have to take it back to the dealer as it seems they've since added a heat shield to the recall.
