    Thoughts on the new R1...

...so with our very own sport bike pimp egging me on, I've taken a look at the new R1 and well, eff me as it's quite a tempting package. Was curious what folks thought of it, being as it's winter and all and I'm bored.

The new R1 to me brings this to mind:
pluses = sexiest sounding liter bike around (shy of the RSV4), parts availability, helping a local forum guy meet his #'s while getting a good deal...
minuses = it's not a Ducati, I'll never use all that power, and it's not a Ducati (or Aprilia)

    Plus, well... yeah....

    Other contenders and drawbacks:

    -S1000RR
pluses = TC, ABS, QuickShift and MEGA Power
minuses = $17k, or about $4k more than an R1

    -RSV4R
pluses = V4 power and sound, Italian style
minuses = $16k, or about $3k more than an R1

I've heard amazing things about the Bazzaz TC / Fuel Mapping stuff for the Japanese bikes, and for the same $$ I could likely get an R1, fitted with a Bazzaz , an Ohlins TTX and some valving for the forks.

    Decisions decisions....

so this is what you meant when you told me earlier that you have to get back to work.

I say you buy it. I'll even help by buying the NC30 off you once its put back together

having owned a previous gen R1 you answered your own questions there....

i havent had a chance to take one for a ride yet, but besides the looks i have heard nothing but good things from other R1 owners...

hell i drove 23 hours to help a friend pick one up

just hearing it run made the trip worth it.

Yeah, I'll need an exhaust too, can't muffle that sound.... plus I heard the underseat heat was a BITCH.

    And sorry, the NC30 stays.

My R1 makes me all everytime I look at it, never mind if I toss a leg over it Reason enuff to buy one, yes?

I don't see the "it's not a ducati being a minus, that should be a plus Buy the bike, keep the oil and filter changed regularly and don't think about the valves for 26,000 miles. Cheaper, less maintenance, and it won't brake...ever

I love the sound of the stock pipes, just not the looks. As for the heat, I'm 90% squid (I like to ride in shorts) and the heat doesn't really bother me. Only seems to be an issue if you're stuck in traffic or at a stoplight that takes forever to change

Yeah, Scott, I'm not sure what the issue is here.

    "It's not a Ducati"?

BFD, you'll be happier with the Yamahammer for many reasons you'll come to learn.

personlly, i don't think its all that sexy in stock trim. (exhaust and tail particularly, and headlights) but it's no dealbreaker. i'd have to ride just about anything before dropping tht kind of coin.

Good to know about the heat, I never ride in shorts though and don't see myself commuting on this bike, ever. As for the S1000RR, I'm looking into it, but I'd honestly rather give my business to the jockey versus a BMW shop I have no relationship with. That said, it's hard to argue with the THREE YEAR WARRANTY you get w/ the S1000RR, not to mention the tech it's got. They came out a-swingin for sure.

Indeed, which is why I'm looking closely at the V4 Ape and the R1. The BMW is in the equation simply because it's *the* bike to beat in the class this year.

I'd vote for the RSV4R. It may be a superbike, but it "feels" like a MotoGP bike. Like a cheaper Desmo...much cheaper.

And then you can rent it out to BoMo Elite members at track days to help pay for it...

Maybe we need a poll: What would you rather ride for a session as a rental, new R1 or RSV4R.

edit: poll added. S1000RR not included due to the fact that it's German and will Blitzkrieg it's way in regardless of a poll.
