    Rattle on high rpm

    Hey all,
I have a bike that just recently started making a weird noise.

When in neutral, if you bring the RPMs up and then roll off, you hear a rattle noise coming from the clutch/transmission area.

Same thing if you're cruising along and use engine breaking to slow down (rattle, rattle, rattle).

Has anyone seen this before? Any suggestions on what it is?

Any mechanical types want to take a peek at it one night this week, or over the weekend?

    Thanks!
    --Pat

Don't know if they have one but the CCT is a Cam-chain tensioner they tend to rattle a bunch on High RPM's and then quiet down low???? Just a thought

Okay, I'll dig out the pdf manual and see if that's in there. I hope it's not a miserable thing ti replace as I was hoping to sell the bike next week.

24k got it ... five years ago or so and it hasn't seen many miles since then. before that service history is non-existent.

Had the same symptom on my new-to-me CBR600RR down at VIR yesterday. Timing Disc Bolt backed out, pushed against the timing cover, busted a quarter-sized hole in it and then broke. Take off the clutch cover and look around, and make sure everything is torqued.

24K...have you had the valve clearnce checked and adjusted lately cause you are about due. a sloppy valve train can be noisy...though you can often hear it at idle as well.

honestly, I've done nothing to this bike since we got it. I just changed the oil for the first time last weekend.

    Re: Rattle on high rpm

CCTL issues on CBR's have a distinctive sound.

The best way I have heard it described is like ball bearings in a coffee can. It is more prevalent when the bike is cold and goes away when the bike is warm and it is louder at higher RPMs.

The more stress on the CCTL the worse. My F4i race bike had HRC valve springs and I had to replace the CCTL and camchain every race weekend.

It gradually gets worse over the weeks but usually doesn't cause any mechanical issues if you don't let it stay like that until the camchain jumps a tooth.

    There are two fixes.

    1. Get a manual cam chain tensioner lifter like this one. That way, when the camchain stretches or the spring gets worn, you can adjust it to take up the slack.

    2. Install a new Honda one and pray it fixes it permamently.....but it probably won't.

    Re: Rattle on high rpm

ok so found out it isn't my CCT, not sure what my problem is, seems to have a rattle in high rpms or when engine breaking, got it checked out today and guy seemed to thing my drive chain is a little out of wack, not sure whats wrong, seems to only have a noise when the bike is warmed up, when its cold or at idle there isn't anything so maybe just my exhaust or something and i am overreacting

Lol. Only when hot? High rpms and on overrun? It's an exhaust join or heat shield rattling.

The bike is in storage near the house, but I have no problem trailering it anywhere. I just don't have a garage to work in anymore.
