Reality of theft?

Lowell is safer than NH.

I had my bike stolen and I was an idiot about it. Left it where it could be grabbed and thrown in a car. I was out about $500.

I had my widow smashed and truck broken into in the cannon mt parking lot and they took everything. I was out about $2k.

I get more worried in unpopulated areas where the younger generations have nothing better to do.

my buddy just had his bike stolen, as I said in the post, locked to the fence of his apartment's driveway and it had an alarm w/tilt sensor...... they still got it

Okay... This summer I will be parking my bike every day, Mon-Fri between the same 2 hours in the same parking lot outside the gym in Manchester... I was thinking of installing a Roadlok Locking System, but not sure if it is worth the money. I have read mixed reviews on Disc Locks and was wondering if anyone has tried this? There are people in and out of the gym, and often we will run outside (so I could periodically check on it). Just looking for some updated advice, it makes me nervous to park the bike there and it may be completely unvalid... but Oh well...

I think you are over thinking it and psyching yourself out. Ride it, lock it with the key/fork lock so it only rolls in a circle and disk lock it if you want. I think the percentage of it getting stolen is very low.

I'd say use a motion alarm to draw attention. Other than that, there isn't much to do unless there's a bench or something to chain it to.

But from my experience, just throw an FJR sticker on the bike. I leave my keys in it all the time, no one has stolen it yet...

I was gonna say buy a 'wing. No one wants to steal one of those :).

I leave mine in downtown Manchester unlocked all the time. Granted, it's a 'wing, but no one bothers it.

I've left mine in casino parking lots, hotel parking lots, and park and rides. So far no problems.

If it's really sketchy I'll put it in reverse, which will keep someone from rolling it off, but again, if they want it, they'll get it.

I keep a 6 ft. steel cable lock in my bike for when I park in places that make me feel uneasy. If I can't lock it to something solid, I at least thread it through the back wheel and a passenger peg so it can't be rolled anywhere without picking it up.

I also opt for a parking garage when possible.

Spend 10$ and get a cover from walmart. The less people that see "oooo a shiny sportbike" the less interest it generates.

the fact is this (beyond the whole "if they want it they will take it" thing). thieves are lazy. they will look for the easiest thing steal (not locked). im willing to bet that the van in that video went by that bike at least once or someone scoped it out first.
the next thing is thieves will usually be equipped to deal with 1 type of lock. disc lock= skateboard or a few guys to pick it up. cable lock=bolt cutters. and so on. your best defense beyond just locking the ignition is using 2 different locks. so a disc lock and a cable lock. chances are they will be prepped for one but not the other. with (essentially) 3 locks on the bike (ignition, disc, cable), i would think most thieves would write it off as too much work to steal. if it still gets taken, then at least they had to work for it.

8 securitycameras at the house and Garmin GPS tracker in the bike that notifies my phone if the bike moves from a marked area and it allows me to find it with accuracy of 3ft. Cheers

I parked 3-5 evenings a week in the UNH Manchester parking lot one summer for grad school. The closest thing to "theft" I got was the occasional person checking it out while I was walking up to it. I just ignition locked it. Never came out to it missing, tipped over, bearing a new scratch or two, etc.

Get a proper chain. Chain bike to properly immobile street furniture.
Do not run chain through wheels. Do not leave chain or lock lying on the floor.

Expect to spend a few hundred$.

(Chain is rendered pointless if not locked *to* something that theif cannot move/remove. Do not lock this to street signs, very easily defeated)

Insurance >>> Locks, in my opinion.

But then I ride a V-Strom. Another low-water mark on the scale of bike thefts.

I run two of these... One on each wheel. Not sure how much good they'd do, but all I hope to do is make it more trouble than the next bike...

We used to issue company GPS's to our staff. All but one of those stolen was stolen in NH, "Because that doesn't happen here."

A friend got his R6 stolen out of his garage then his R1 outside of work with a bike lock and I thought we lived in a good area, so I don't know anymore.
