At first I was unsure what the cause was......But after poppin off my seat and lookin round I noticed some blackish liquid drippin from the the rectifier...........
I remember when I first was looking into this bike to bike someone mentioned that these things are know to blow with out any notice and they are right........
Incase someone hasnt had this happen to them I tell you that it fuggin stinks. Really it smells awefull. I have incountered capacitors blowing at work before and it the same bad smell that seems to linger for a while.

It's the VFR trademark!
People are still paranoid even with the new ones.
And Honda even has an upgrade program for 02 to get better ones even though they technically were fine.

damn, man... sorry to hear this![]()
seems like it's one thing after another, huh?![]()

Is it a Honda only item or can you find a cheaper alternative? Worth carrying a spare?
Old bikes can be a real headache. Last month, I lent my 86 Concours to a fellow Concours Owners Group member from Austria who rode it to North Carolina and back. Two miles from my house on the return leg, the fuel filter came apart internally and dumped thousands of miles worth of crud into my carbs. The pliot jets on #2 and #3 cyclinders clogged immediately and he limped it to my house on two cylinders. Could have been a whole lot worse though.
There are a whole bunch of aftermarket electrical products for the VFR...
Look on the VF/VFR mailing list, or vfrdiscussion.com, etc.. and someone can probably tell you about various options other than buying the original Honda part.

You got that right.......I was aware that these viffers seem to have a problem with the rectifiers.......No surprise as I have noticed there pretty good at being a "nut warmer"![]()
I believe I heard of some peps adding mini pc fans to aid in keeping them kool. Which is something I think I'll do with the new on

Thanks for the links Ben.....It kinda seems as though most of the VFR sites focus towards the Newer viffers.....But I have found a couple that are more focused towards the 1st generation VFR'sOriginally posted by benSV

I have heard of a company called "Electrex" who make RR's that are suppose to be better then stock![]()
I think thats what I'll go with along w/ mounting a small PC fan onto it to aid in kooling that fucker down.

Try to get a picture of them. I got two spares off an '82 CB900F.....if they are the same, you are welcome to one if you need it. I bought them as spares for my 750, but unfortunatly I bought a newer bike instead of riding the old beast![]()

I have to fly for a few hours and I'll try to make work when I get back home
The numbers though:
Shindengen SH593-12 [6.4]
If that helps....
It would be sweet if you have one that'll work

I'll need pictures. They are buried somewhere in my between-moves boxes, so I can't really use the numbers to help. If I see them, I'll recognize if they are the ones or not.

You do? Up on Gigante Drive in Hampstead right on the Atkinson line? Hmm, I guess there's no good way to get into Mass from where you live, is there...Originally posted by stoinkythepig
I drive right by them every day.
That's about a mile from my parents house/my current workplace, worked at Traynor Glass in that same plaza one summer after high school, biked to work every day. Still have the scars from the stitches, heh, found out I was much more suited to engineering than to glass work.![]()
My bad. Read it wrong. Thought it was Rick's Motorcycle Enterprises in Plaistow.
That said, I do take a rather circuitous route back and forth.
Well Untill last nite I forgot about having a friend on the other side of town who happens to have a mini' grave yard of old bikes. So I payed him a visit today to maybe find a RR tha would work on my bike. long story short I managed to find one that seemed to match up and came from a V-4 Honda (magna I think).
The plugs didn't match up perfect so I cut em offand spliced in th eplugs from my blown one. It had all the same colored wires, etc But did have one extra.....A single Black wire which mine didnt have....Since it wasn't mounted directly to the frame like mine I consider the Black to be a ground
and grounded it to the frame.
By the time I got done it was pretty late so only made a quick test run with it. Everything appears to be fine
So I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed and hope it works for a while. I do plan on buying another one that is meant for my bike and keep the other as a spare
