    86' VFR carb off project

Well I'm now kinds on hold because I had to order a sop book for my bike ( I got the Haynes as suggested by other member)
Cleaning th e carbs all out is the oly major thing I should need to do to get this thing ridable (other then some maitance things such as fluid changes etc.)
Hey NHViffer....Since you know what this project entials I'm hopeing you can let me know what the secrets are. As in I only want to take off what is really needed.
As I am now I have side plastic, tank, airbox off and all the clamps loosened on the carb boots. Luckly all the screws were aimed so that I could getto them easy.

    Sorry, just noticed this...

Disconnect throttle cables at the pivot on the front left carb. I did this by removing the clamp, which allowed enough slack to get the open & close cable ends out of the pivot.

Also, disconnect the choke cable, which is located in front of all the carbs, up near the stearing head. There is a small clamp there also that once you remove it allows you to get the cable end out of the linkage.

You say that you have the airbox off, I hope that you mean just the plastic portion, do not remove the metal base that connects the air box to all of the carbs. This is how to make sure that the synchronization does not get totally f**'d up.

If you haven't done it already, you probably want to drain the float bowls while the carbs are still on the bike. Helps keep gas spillage to a minimum.

Loosen the rubber manifold clamps at both the carb side and head side, this should make it easier to separate. Make them very loose - it will make it easier. You will be amazed at how much thos manifolds need to stretch to get everything off and back together.

I cant think of anything else connected.

What I would do to get them off is to use a prybar against the rear valve cover, near the center and pry up on that metal that all the carbs are mounted to. It takes a lot of force to pop them out of the manifolds and that is pretty much how they come off - pop.
Careful not to bend any of the linkages that operate the carbs together during this procedure.

Unless you plan on synch'ing the carbs from scratch, I recommend that you keep all the bodies connected together and to the top mount. It will make soaking more difficult though.

Let me know if you need help. I could probably shoot over your way this next weekend.

    86' VFR carb off project

    Hey Tim
Thanks foir the great walk through...
I will be getting the manual in mid this week but haven't been able to help my self...I have be tinkering a lil' at a time. I Did lossen the metal part of the air box to carbsa but stopped there and didnt take it off (only lossened the bolts and re snugged)
I hada feeling I wanted to keep that part together.
I have also already gottten the choke cable off and all the rubber boots clamps well loosened. I think all I have left is the throttle cables.
I was kinda concerned about if I had to disconect any vacum lines at all as there seems to be a few tee'd in between carbs and back valve cover.
I'll let you know if I need ed any help in person this week end.

Thanks agian for taking the time to help me out here
    Mark

    86' VFR carb off project

Well due to my 60-70hr a week work load I havent really been able to work on the bike all that much at one time. So it been lil't at a time.

I Gots the carbs off and sliders out along with the bowls off too.
But I still need to tke the jets out because I know for sure that the main jets are clogged up with spooge. I really am trying to avoid taking the piliot jet out because I dont want to screw up the settings.
But I did manage to get most of of spooge out of the rest of the carbs and also had to fight with a stuck butterfly that sucked.

well I guess thats about it......I did pick up oil & filter along with some DOT 4 Brake fluid to flush out the brakes, clutch, etc

    Mission Complete!!!!

Well I was able to find enough time to finish cleaning the carbs, reassemable them and put them on. Along with Oil change, coolant flush, and clutch/brake flush.
After getting it all back together it fucking worked It took a bit to get it fired up and idleing.
I managed to put a couple miles on it just around the shop yard. I cant wait to get this thing on the road to really test it out. I'm in freaking love

Hey Viffer...Thanks for the tips......I think all in all it was pretty easy to do
