I’m considering making the transition to a “Dad” bike though I don’t have (That I know of) or plan to have kids in the foreseeable future and looking to see if there are any bikes I’m unaware of.
I have the “whored” 03 SV built by a fellow inmate now and it’s nice but think a stock pipe on a moderate sport touring/adventure bike would be more suitable and keep the speed on the tracks.
Looking for: upright-like stance, somewhat reliable, not loud, I’d say 90/10 pavement to dirt road capabilities, nothing over 500#, something you can still power wheelie 2nd gear at a minimum, something I can put a good top box and run my soft panniers for a weekend.
Budget: something close to 6/7k used market.
Bikes on the radar: FJ-09, Multistrada, vstrom, versys. Carbs don’t worry me but no DR/KLR’s anymore.
The 2014+ Vstrom 1000 is right around 500 lbs, seen a few recently posted on ADV for 5-6k. Engine is plenty torquey, but it’s smooth, so it doesn’t really “feel” fast. Pretty decent stock suspension and brakes (at least compared to the 650). Not sure if you can power wheelie one, didn’t try on my demo ride.
The Tiger 1050 would be a good choice too, engine is way more fun than the DL1000 and definitely has a sportier feel with the 17” vs 19” front. Try to find a 2010+. Supposedly the stock suspension is pretty shitty (mine was upgraded) - I actually saw a 2010 on marketplace with Ohlins suspension for 5k.
The Versys 1000 I think is a closer to 550 lbs. Haven’t ridden one, or the FJ09 yet. You got twins, triples, and I4’s on your list - what engine style do you like best?
Edit: Here's the Tiger1050 I mentioned above. Looking at the pics, it appears that this bike has a bunch of other mods the guy doesn't know about (Brembo brakes, looks like the newer Tiger Sport headlight, SW Motech crash bars and skid plate, wider pegs, powdercoated bits, axle sliders). This is setup almost exactly like my old Tiger; I'm willing to bet that this bike was owned or worked on by Jim Hamlin.

I don’t think I’d go back to an I4 again but I wanted to be inclusive to anything. I had an 03 650 Stromboli and it was sweet but sold it to clear some student loans out.
I rode an FJ and likes it. Seems like a Poor Man’s Mulitstrada which was appealing. A nice balance of power & ergos. I’ve seen a few 1050’s out there with high miles which makes me think people enjoy them and actually ride them.

The ultimate dad bike is an NC700 DCT.
What's the difference between a bolt and a screw?
First you screw, then you bolt.
^^^ Not holding out much hope for the power-wheelie in that case, but otherwise "true facts." The dad-est rider at my employer rode one of those before he retired to a sailboat.

Africa twin? There are some in the 8-9k range, but you might find one a little lower.
I own a DL-650, and my brother has a DL-1000 - neither will satisfy your wheelie requirement. Of your list, the only bikes that would satisfy that are the FJ-09 and the Multistrada. You may also want to consider a KTM 990 SMR, or a Duk Monster.
Tiger 800? I think the later models came with cruise control but not sure if those it would fit your price range.
Also, if you want to save on some coin, I'd look into 07-09 FZ6. I loved mine with a top case. I suspect the FJ-09 is the modern equivalent though. I do love the CP3 engine in my XSR.
tell you what, my SV650 was a better offroad bike than my pig heavy V-strom,
V-strom is great for gravel roads, off road, not so much

I went for the multistrada. Stupid power, holds a ton of stuff, conspicuous looks.
Yeah I like my 1200s. Maybe for sale soon.

Was in the market last year for something similar minus the dad part. It was between the Multistrada 1200, Super Duke GT, and S1000XR. Ended up with an S1000XR. No regrets.
Came down to reliability, dealer network, and maintenance. The BMW ticked all the boxes plus it's prob the fastest of the bunch.

I had no desire for the off road thing. and being a dad it was to cover several bases. vfr1200 was one hell of a gentlemen's express.
but i would say multistrada for sure.
You could possibly find a used 1290 Super Adventure T for that price. It is the ultimate hooligan commuter.
Alternatively, the 1190 Adventure S would be my next go-to.
2023 KTM 890 Adventure R
Found me a nicely suited FJ with all the goodies including full suspension work down south for a deal. Would be curious how a suspension tuned FJ handles over a Multistrada.
First Fly & Ride is coming end of the month for it.
Yes it is. Seems to be a solid package and with the suspension setup for my weight already I can’t see a reason not to give its maiden voyage an 800 mile trip back to Boston.
There was a spotless one for sale in Wilmington on FB but for the same price I’d rather have some scratches and farkles than a garage queen.
