Yeah, I taught him. He's a good rider, he passed.

i didn't teach Robyn. There were 4 classes this weekend and I taught 2 of them.

Freaking freezing all weekend and I'm sunburned...go figure.

Also, first class of the year and I got audited by the MSF. An inspector came down to watch me teach. I was teaching solo on a modified range with no modified range cards. Had to wing it mostly. Worrying.

Pay attention. Don't tell long stories. Learn how to talk to people, not at them. Well placed humor works. Make the students feel confident and comfortable.

When do you take the RCP?

If you can, spend alot of time shadowing courses before hand. Range and Classroom(I stress classroom). Do the precourse assignment. The better you know the material before the Prep the more you will get out of the prep. Remember, they expect you to know the curriculum before class starts. They only teach you how to teach the curriculum.

We held a Prep last year and the 2 most confident people struggled the most. They have since become great new coaches, but the prep really grounded them. Not that they didn't have skills, they just coasted through the first couple days of the prep and had weak "Learner-centered teaching skills.

We start teaching this Fri eve. (xxx Fingers crossed for good weather xxx)

First class of the RCP or first class you are coaching?

    Tips for the RCP:

Keep an eye on the clock during exercises. The minutes can fly by and you'll find yourself way behind. Don't allow yourself to get sidetracked too much. ALWAYS try to answer a question with a question that helps the student find the answer themselves.

    derek

Do we have any instructors in NH here? My g/f is looking to take the course this season, would be cool to have it taught by someone I know (but NH courses are cheap for NH residents )

Re: Teaching MSF tomorrow and sunday

    1. Know the material you are trying to teach. Ask open ended questions. keep the group involved and thinking. Don't lecture.

    2. Keep personal stories to a minimum. They are beginners and they want the basics on how it moves not the best riding route from here to Mt. Washington.

    3. Watch for safety issues on the range. Students driving at each other. Eye protection, sleeves rolled up, not covering the clutch, covering the brake. Know your basic positioning and how to stop the exercise safely.

Re: Teaching MSF tomorrow and sunday

When you teach the student course, you will get a partner and be in charge of a couple exercises. In the RiderCoach Guide, there is a page on the left of all the range card pages. make sure you understand the purpose behind each exercise. It is not always apparent. When you teach your couple exercises, get together with your partner before you go on, layout who will do what, what signals you will use to communicate with each other. where each of you will coach from and how the exercise will end. Know the objectives. A good trick that the trainers will like is that you should be familiar with the previous exercise and relate your exercise to the previous exercise and/or the classroom material (Smooth segway for the students) In your coaching use MSF buzz words: Friction zone, Squeeeze, SEE, Look, etc.

I'm sure I speak for all the RiderCoaches on the board when I offer... When you are taking the course, feel free to ask any of us anything. We'll be happy to offer advise (bad and good)
