might work w/ a small group, but not w/ 10 or more bikes... you'd have to pass the car & every other bike before you moved back into the right lane... i think passing should stick to the "keep it simple, stupid" phelosophy: do it when it's safe and be predictable. passing someone & hitting the brakes is not predictable.

... and just immagine what woulda happened if we did that to the guy in the red Durango on that big VT ride..... i'm sure at least one of us woulda ended up in the hospital

I like it. I'm all for punishing assholes who cant go the fucking speed limit and wont pull over to let a huge line of traffic behind them by.

If you're thinking of the same VT ride as me that was a disaster anyway so this couldn't be that much worse. This keeps the speeds lower. When the lead riders pass at one opportunity and then continue speeding down the road at a high speed the riders who had to wait longer to pass then have to speed even more to catch back up.

Happened to me and I was going absolutely stupid fast to catch up and by the time I'd catch up the leaders had already passed another car and I'd have to worry about passing that car.

But I guess that is just cause on that ride no one cared about letting the group regroup after a pass.

That tactic works. And, it is a useful tool when dealing with tools. Not saying to slow down enough to infuriate people, but just enough to get everyone around.

Often when running a group behind another group, you tend to come up behind some people that seem determined to "not let them get by me again..." after getting buzzed by the prior group.

People have jacked their brakes, swerved at riders, and thrown shit out their windows/sunroofs. Everything from waving fists in the air, to tossing pennies, to jettisoning their McD's trash. And this isn't just cages -- some cruiser clowns can be just as bad, or worse. This has happened from the Mohawk Trail to the Appalachian Gap. Fuck'em.

I think this is a bloody silly theory and it creates more problems than it solves. But why go on - it's probably no worse than overtaking like a knob in the first place. Neither are very good long-term survival strategies.

as to keeping up with the lead bike, never try or worry about it.

the group can and will get strung out. worry about the bike in front of you and the bike behind you.

only pass when you feel it's safe.

I think this above poster pretty much sums it up.

And if there's 2 cars in front of you, make sure you've waited until you have enough time and space to safely pass them BOTH.

I never have much problem getting past cages, but the group of 50 hardleys riding side by side is something else if you can get past them all, you end up riding in the middle of them....if they let you in

Yes I have definitely been there. Much better to take them all in one go and don't even try to count the middle fingers pointed in your direction as you pin it past them at triple digits.

I do this on highways with a few friends I ride with regularlly. However, we only do it when we need to change lanes as a group and their isn't enough room for all of us to switch over as a pack. it works wonderfully...

ah, see that works, chris... if you're gettin off the highway or something & there's a ton of traffic in the right lane, one person squeezes in and slows down to make room for the rest of the bikes.... that's cool, but the original strategy would be a little too irritating to cagers... they can already hate us & know they can kill us by hitting us, i don't wanna give em any more reason to want to actually do just that.

Passing Car to have a clean run on the Angeles Crest Highway is a must! I love that road!

But this manuever??? Scetchy at best. What happens if you get someone with a temper issue or has no issues giving out some road rage and decides not to slow down, but rear end you. I have seen some scary cases of drivers taking defensive moves towards us passing. If I pass a car I get by them and move on. Remember the Rule, "Ride your own ride" This goes for making decitions on passing when safe! We will always wait for you at the next route change or turn.

I as well was on the VT ride with the Durango. That would have been a very ugly accident and that guy would have either gone to the hospital from us beating him or to jail for atempted murder with a motor vehicle!

& As for the Ass-hats on Hardleys in Large groups that HOG the road and try their best to block you out and keep you from passing or cutting inbetween them. FUCK THEM...

I ran into this last year on a Camp Meade trip in VT, myself and Ken had to pass about 20 bikes all in one shot because they wouldn't make way or let us cut in. When we finally had a long straight away we blasted by them like rockets! It was actually fun, but took a long time before we found the right place to pull it off. Unfortunately we were the only ones that made it by. the other three got stuck behind them a little while longer.

That is a good example Mike - it was a pain in the arse but we got by in the end to much waving of middle fingers from the redneck brigade.

As always it's just a question of waiting for the opportunity to get the hammer down, not using a gimmicky manouevre.
