Why does a front wheel speedo equal accuracy?

I thought Rye had put an aftermarket instrument cluster on his ZX-79 that had an accurate speedo.

You can have a front wheel sensor and still dial in 5% high readings.

All of my bikes have run 5-10% optimistic on the speedo. But, even at 10% optimistic 160 indicated is still pretty darn quick.

I think it might be a way to keep people's speeds down. Like 'wow, I'm doing 100mph, that'll be good enough' and it really is 'only' 90 or some such silliness..

That is the only thing that makes any sense to me. FWIW, my VTR's speedo runs almost exactly 10% optimistic, but the odometer is almost spot-on and may even slightly under-represent how many miles I've gone. Weirdness...

I've seen a lot of speculation that they are designed to read high on purpose, so the manufacturer doesn't have to deal with people contesting tickets saying that the speedo was reading low.

Better to err on the side of reading high, then the ones that read low end up accurate as opposed to reading low.

Also the fudge factor helps deal with people changing tires, etc.. which can effect the speedo.

It has nothing to do with difficulty in creating an accurate mechanism.

It is just this.. (again this is all speculative)

They know sportbikers do things like change tires (screws with speed), change gearing (screws with speedo), etc..

The 8-10% high error would cause mods which lower the speedo reading to still keep the speedo reading high.

ISTR riding next to Rye last winter (with you) and he had said we were doing 95 on the highway. I was flipping as the VFR was showing insanely high at like 110mph or something.

As Ben pointed out, any inaccuracy in the speeod will be a linear inaccuracy. Your speedometer has some way to measure the number of rotations of the wheel, and multiplies that by a fixed constant to either generate a magnetic field to move a needle, or generate a voltage or current for a digital speedometer. Either way, the equation will be something like (# of rotations per second) * (Gain) = (Voltage/Current/Magnetic field), a linear equation. So if gain is 5% higher than it should be, you'll read 5% higher at all speeds. At 35you'll read 1.05*35= 36.75 mph, at 120 you'll read 120*1.05 = 126. The speedo may appear more inaccurate at higher speeds because the inaccuracy in terms of mph will be greater, but the inaccuracy in terms of the percentage of speed remains the same.

Yep, in fact for most systems you should be able to recalibrate it in one of two spots. Either adjust the sending unit, the unit that records the rotation of the wheel and translates it into a electrical signal, or adjust the display unit which takes that electrical signal and translates it into a user-readable form (needle, number, whatever).

Or like you said, a black box type device which sits between the sender and the display which applies a second gain factor to the sender signal to adjust for it's inaccuracy. Most speedo correction systems seem to take this approach, as it doesn't require permanently altering the bike's speedometer.

    Squidly Activity Post # 3 - Saw 160mph on the 7R...

my thinking on this, as regards the ole fashioned, front-wheel driven speedos, is that the manufacturers just pick a gear ratio that's convenient & close to the actual ratio... based on manufacturing concerns, longevity, original tire diameter fully inflated, etc... then err on the side of caution (up) for reasons stated before.

I think that the reason they didn't strive for pinpoint accuracy was simple: $$$.

'course, as your front tire wears, the speedo's gonna be off progressively, anyway...
