Even though I've owned a motard for 3 years now I've never actually ridden it on a actual 'supermoto' track. IE: Short karting style track, foot out, jumps, sliding around, you know.. Well finally got to give it a go today and man it's fun!
$25 and you can ride all day! Easy on tires. 15 minutes from work. Wed night sessions every other weekend. I think I'm in love. Other than the fact it was hot hot hot out and I felt like passing out a few times it was a blast. A buddy from the Jordan team days lives close by and made it out as well (#22 Yamaha).
If anyone has been considering making the drive to Englishtown, or Batavia. Do eeeet. Def worth it. All types of bikes were out there today too. DRZ's. TW's. KTM's. Husabergs. Husky's. Was packed house.
Can't wait to do it a few more times and really learn how it works. Was totally different learning to ride 'supermoto' style. That said bunch of guys ride kneedown and were moving along but I know how to ride kneedown and that's more fun on a big roadracing track. I experimented with kneedown through some of the faster turns but yea, been there done that. I want to learn how to ride like the true-supermoto pro's do and that whole new style of riding. Always fun to learn new shit.
Thx JRO for the sweet pics. Since we just picked up 17's for Jen's TT-R the next time we go she's riding too..
PS: Dropkick Murphy shirt is for East Coast pride!

Close your eyes, look deep in your soul, step outside yourself and let your mind go.
That looks sick. I have always been curious how it would be to ride a dirt section on slicks though. Seems like the rear wouldn't hook up and the front would push in the corners.

17s on a TTR = stupid fun.
Went down to my first big bike sumo event at Englishtown last year, hoping to make it down again. It was a ton of fun, very relaxed racing org.
can't wait to try it myself, gonna be a hoot !

Updated with video. This guy Stuart (aka Stuman) put this together. He's a California Superbike School instructor and has been running at the sharp end of the WSMC motard and SV races (1st, 2nd, that sorta thing). He was pitting next to me and got to chat a bit. Good guy.
Myself (yellow RMZ) and my buddy Chris (#22 Yamaha, Red TLD gear) are in the first 3 minutes of the vid. This was my 2nd session & Chris' first so I waved him by cause we were taking turns leading each other around. Didn't know Stu was back there filming! haha Make sure you watch in 720p HD =] As you can see was pretty tight going sometimes! This stuff doesn't show dirt section. That might be up later.

It's slippery.
Some guys run grooves on the back tires but it makes little different. Most run full slicks. Of course the guys on street legal bikes have DOTs on.
You can't hammer it in on the front and/or use a ton of front brake. You have to remember you have a big nasty front brake setup compared to a standard dirtbike front brake system so combined with a slick tire it's real easy to overload the front. So you sit WAY UP on the front tire and just put as much weight as you can on it. It does push. A bunch of guys pushed the front right over the berm and crashed. Saw at least 6 or 7 go down that way.
Powering out of turns you have to shift back and put your weight on the back wheel. It's easy to hit gas and have back just come right around on you since again, slick tire and no grip. As long as you don't loose all momentum you can get good drives.
You'd be surprised thou how much grip you do have. Along as you aren't cranked way over on the side of the tire you can get in there and drive it out pretty well. This track had a two dirt straights with little rollers on one and two jumps on the other. You could take the bermed up outside in the corners (slower) or the rutted up insides (faster). If there is a rut you can really get in and out well.
Here's track map. We ran the "Optional" course, full yellow and orange. Second half of day dirt opened up.
