GAD DAM .....it looks like that roadrash stuff has got to hurt!... BUT BAD.......![]()
I still love the smell of burnt racing fuel in the morning!
It's not a suzuki trait... every two-wheeled vehicle has the potential to do it.
Depends on a lot of things... power, frame geometry, what the rider is doing, whether the bike has the right tires, etc..

I rode out a full on tank slapper that dented the tank on my ducati M750. Ken M. was right behind me, and assumed I was a goner.
We were just cruising (40mph?) along a twisty, but bumpy road in central MA. I tipped it in to a sharp left hander, and a bump got the front wagging a little. I rolled on, but more bumps set the bars fully slamming from lock to lock!
With strains of "Hold on loosely, but don't let go" running through my head, I kept my grip on the bars as the bike stood up and headed off road. My short reach meant that I was pulled up out of the seat onto the gas cap! As I slowed and hit the grass the slapper subsided and I came to a stop. before the tree line. If only Ken had been filming...
All I can say is don't give up. You haven't actually crashed til you're on the ground.
I actually now enjoy getting into a little slapper on the 125 at the track. It has so little steering range that I can just let it bang and stay hard on the gas. Just relaxing will make it stop.![]()

"fuckit!"
Why? The bike has brakes, and the ability to steer. Once you jump off, you're still going to be moving, you just won't have any control over the situation.Originally posted by Kham

if you're gonna hit a wall or a tree before the bike correct itself then wouldn't you bail? and the only thing you should do is to try to accelerate if you can and not use brake as i understand it.

No, you can't use brakes, BUT I was running out of space quickly. I was off the road near the trees when I stopped. You'd be surprised how quickly you slow if you're off the gas in a slapper. All that wheel movement is like putting the brakes on.
If I had bailed because I thought I was going to hit a tree, then I would have crashed.
I have bailed off the race bike headed for the wall outside of T6. My brain said "BAIL" when I was still 15 feet from it, and I did. It hurt. If I had been able to stay on the bike, a bit longer, I would have had a much softer landing.
I know the track is different than the street as we have tires and such to hit, but I have since rammed the tires in T3 twice. Never bailed, and never fell! Both times I was able to turn the bike around continue.
My point is: Don't bail until impact is an absolute certainty and even then, consider staying on the bike... If you can avoid a tree by jumping off, why can't you steer around it???
I agree with the "stay on the bike" idea, but there are those times that bailing would have been a better idea.

I think you would still hit the wall even if you bailed. You won't be able to put that much distance between you and the bike and your direction will be unchanged. (until you collide with somethingOriginally posted by Kham

P.S. your bike "shure is shine-ny."

Personally my best tank slapper evolved from a minor incident with a deer. Shortly after contact there was also nearly a minor incident with my boxer shorts. Let the bars do what they want. It'll take care of itself.

That sure was something to watch. I've seen a lot of good saves at the track, but that one ranks right up at the top. It really was lock-to-lock. As it started, I actually came close up, just behind him on his left, it slowed his forward progess that much.Originally posted by Paul_E_D

Them Ducatis are dangerous!![]()
But I admit, I too have had a full-out tank slapper on my Triumph. Not my current one, but my 1975 T160 Trident. I was at 90mph on a 40mph road (the then-new Worcester airport industrial park road) when I passed over a slightly raised manhle cover. That set the forks into a dance of indulating cycles that also hit lock-to-lock, but I survived it upright. I shut off the throttle and loosed my grip (this, with no training whatsoever) and it subsided. was a mile from home, so I got my shorts changed quickly.
