All you track guys gimme your input(gear related)

I am potentialy buying a used 2pc alpinestars suit from a member here, which I would say is in good quality with minor scuffs, and a seam that needs to be repaired. The jacket fits nice in the arms/shoulders and has room enough for a back protector.

My problem lies with the pants.

When the whole suit is on me and i am sitting on my bike, i feel like there is "a lot" of added effort involved with picking my toe off the peg and bringing it down to shift and then back up again(keep in mind i have only road in jeans before). The pleated part of the suit that is right above the knee seems to be almost at full strech capacity when my toes are up on the pegs. All the padding seems to be where it is supposed to be. Considering this is a used suit i doubt it will form fit or strecth to where i need it too? The bike i plan on riding is a 2009 750 gsxr, that has stock adjustble pegs. Should i lower and bring em closer? Is this how i am supposed to feel? Ive never had a pair of leather racing pants.

I have looked all over teh int3rnetz for advice on how i am supposed to feel while in a suit, or what to look for when buying one. Nothing too informational popped up. So i turn to you, people of NESR.... Will you answer the call??

Its a great suit and for the money I do not want to pass this up. With that being said i also do not want to put myself in a position to ride with a disadvantage before i even turn the bike on.

    Anyones advice/tips would be helpful...

you'll adjust to it. Full gear is always gonna be more restrictive than jeans.

It should should wierd when standing around in it. Pulling up at the ****s. Then when you get on the bike it should feel more comfy in that part. I guess if you never had a set on it would feel odd shifting. Wait till you add boots. But the funny thing is is that when you get on the track and do a few laps after a while it feels normal.

This was my first year wearing full gear on the track. What a adjustment, i found the boots the hardest to get use to. But after a few days of wearing it, felt totally normal.

Okay, now that I'm at a keyboard that isn't part of a freakin cell phone, I'll take more time to give you a serious answer...

Why don't you just get a couple of guys to lift it? JK, stop bein a sally.

nah, jk I'm not your legs & I'm not in your pants (thank god) so I dunno how "tight" this tight is... but yea, it's not gonna be as comfy as jeans. Worst case scenario, if you can't adjust to the new fit, you can pay a tailor a fiddy spot (or so I'd expect? I have no idea) & have them alter the knees a little.

thanks pete, im gonna have my tailor fix a seem or two on it anyway. it might be something i really just have to get used too, and sitting on the bike while its on the rearstand just aint the same as going for a ride to test it out. for 150 bucks im willing to take the chance on a great suit.

you can always send them to that guy that works for Vanson but works on other brands on the side. he should be able to fix them up right for ya. There's a thread on here about it, shouldn't be too hard to find.

FWIW, people tell me my leathers (thanks squirrel master!) are actually a touch big for me. It's still way more restrictive than anything I'm used too. Add a back protector, it's worse. Add gloves and boots and I can't feel the controls or the shifter! After 10 mins on the track, I forgot about all of this. It's been comfy and normal since. You may adjust, if it's too far off you may not, but don't expect race gear to feel like normal clothes. That's my 1/5th a cent from this novice, who has been there within the past year...

For what you're going to spend on a two-piece, I would look a little more and spend a little more and get a one piece.

As a racer with a 1 piece, I disagree. I'm always so jealous when it's hot as hell and my garage mates can unzip their tops... I end up walking around with a 1 piece half-on looking like more of a goof than usual. And if I don't keep up on pulling it up I risk lawsuits from people scarred by my mooning them to boot...

then again never crashed in a 2 piece and my 1 piece did awesome... maybe the reason is there?

Re: All you track guys gimme your input(gear related)

You are going to have the time of your life. I will never forget my first day at the track. Anybody want to hear my story? No... Well I was on my vintage bike and had so much fun I looked at the USCRA schedule and said to myself "This ain't enough" So Tuesday morning when Wagners opened I went in and came out with a new tard. Took the penquin school on my vintage bike and came back and took my rookie race the next weekend on the Husqvarna. Anyhow I thought this was going to be easy because during the class I spent all day passing everyone. Little did I know. I spent the first year staying out of last place. The final weekend I finally got a 5th and it was a crowded field so I got a trophy. Wow. What a season though.

I've been looking into 2 piece suits lately too, I will be wearing it on the street more then plaything and i don't want to have to deal with a 1 piece. I went down end of last season in only a textile jacket, that actually held up well . . . . but my jeans didn't lol

Also Mondo crashed in his 2 piece and it seemed to hold up fine if i remember correctly.

My first suit was a 2 piece and I crashed it in T1 with not ill effects. In fact I crashed it about 6 times total and it is my backup now. It is a TopGear too. 300 new.

Re: All you track guys gimme your input(gear related)

Is a 1pc suit "safer" in the sense that there's no zipper between the two to fail?
    Of course.

Is the zipper separating the two pieces of a 2pc suit likely to fail?
    Not if its well constructed.

FWIW, I crash tested my A*s 2-piece a couple of times before passing it on to ... he's crash tested it a few times since then & as far as I know it's held up well for him.

and im spending 160 on this suit, all the one pieces i saw were 500+ but i agree with dan about unzipping the jacket part. It all comes down to price unfortunatly. I needed to find something cheap that wouldnt sacrifice saftey and lrrs happened to be my size. I was origonaly gonna rent the leathers on my track day, but for a little bit more coin i now have something i can call my own.
