    trail braking

I've been trying to get on braking later before turn.

maybe its the way I do it or not doing things quick enough.

(this is going off topic, sorry)
    T1 in Loudon,
    * I would hold throttle in 3rd until the 1st brake marker
    * then downshift to 2nd get some engine braking
    * when I get to the 3rd marker, I would gently pull the brake lever until the last marker
    * let go off brake and tip the brake over for the turn.
    * while entering apex, I hold the throttle just enough so it will still be under power.

    any suggestions would be great.

I certainly do not want to crash or spoil other riders' day, but also want to slowly increase my turn in speed.

    trail braking

It's hard to say without trying the turn, but trailbraking is generally smoother for hairpins. Pete is right that throttle is smoothest, but a hairpin gets tighter after turn in, so you'd have to go pretty damned slow through the first part to maintain positive throttle through the apex.

It's absolutely a useful technique for the street IMO. It takes practice, but learning more ways to control your speed is sure to make you safer out there.

ku, your actions are a little out of order. You really should roll-off and apply the brakes in one smooth motion, THEN downshift, and turn-in as you release the brakes. On track, downshifting only occurs on the brakes (with a few exceptions ,T1 NOT being one)
