Soon as my Tiger gets a new stepper motor (damn thing) I am planning on cross US trip to Seattle for next year.
A buddy of mine went up to Nova Scotia... he recommended 80/20 tires...
Shinko makes them that'll fit the 955i Tiger, but I've always been weary of cheap rubber.
I'll cross that bridge when I come to it... good luck on your trip!!! Keep us updated!
(And give me a good rundown on that 800 triple... I'd love to hear how it performs for you!)

Whats wrong with the stepper motor?
They don't normally crap out , what year is your bike.
Shinko tires may be cheap but the guys on tigertriple love them and they put up a lot of miles on their tigers , most people I knw who have them really like them.

It's a 2001 Tiger 955i... 16k miles...
It had sat for, 8 years in a garage with nests upon nests growing in it from little creatures... so I'm 99% sure, it got effed during that time in storage.
Idle wanders, clicks... bad news. I'm diagnosing further this week when the snow goes away.

Yeah, you're looking at 700-800 miles of dirt/gravel roads (depending on how much progress they make paving this summer) with wildly variable conditions. You will encounter lots of deep, loose, trackless gravel, probably some mud, and definitely conditions that change in the blink of an eye. You want as much traction as possible, trust me.
Even with TKCs on my Wee-Strom, it was a pretty sphincter-clenching ride pretty much the whole way. It was much easier when I did it on my XR650L -- in part because that bike does much better in those conditions, but also in part because the conditions were easier in general on that trip.

They still make the Transalp, but only sell it overseas.

But of course!
Now watch them bring that Fugly new MF over here, LOL. The CBR 250R BTW is a gem. Kawi is going to have to get to work... although it is a thumper, interestingly enough. Whatever, hell, I want one:

And oh, I guess it's nothing compared to the 205RR that is out of production, that was a real racebike on the streets, 18K rpm for ya.

Just walked into Performance Cycle in Shrewsbury today... they have the Tiger 800 there next to the new 1050 Speed Triple....
I honestly think I will always own a Triumph.
That 800 is COMFY. And it's MUCH smaller than my 955... just nimble looking. It was the mag-wheel version... so it was a little goofy looking for my taste. I like the spoke rims and the high-fender on the XC.
Oh.. and the Speed Trip looks AMAZING in person... much better than any magazine shoots lead on. You don't even notice the headlights.

At a guess about 60-70 thousand as the speedo quit coming back from Alaska and I just fixed it , speedo reads 56000 on it now
but the way I've treated this thing it still runs great. I ran it a little low on oil coming across the Dakotas and starved the rings and so replaced them
did a write up on it for the tiger site

Yeah, that's why I recommended the SE. It'll be a lot more fun in those conditions.
Longest stretch between gas stations is 260 miles from Happy Valley-Goose Bay to Port Hope Simpson.what kind of fuel range doo you need to make the trip?
Extremely.first week of august sounds buggy.

Got an email from the dealer today with my bike's VIN and confirmation that it's en route. Should be here in the next few days -- hopefully in time for the weekend!
