    New Triumph Daytona

The deal that I spoke about is real! I have my deposit on a new left-over Daytona 955i. Should pick it up on Saturday and unfortunately it will sit for a couple months 'til snow clears. Can't wait - 146 bhp Brit bike - and it's not a 600 (or is that 595)!

Everything that I have read about this bike is really good, most stating that it performs better than a ZX-9R, almost as good as a GSXR-1000 or R-1. Right on par with the CBR954R. Been a while since I had a bike that makes respectible power, I think I like it

So, both the 90 VFR and 86 VFR are for sale, I guess my screen name will have to change - any ideas??

Silver. That's a good thing - I was stopped twice this summer on the red VFR, so a "low-key" color like silver should be a nice change, although I appreciate being conspicuous in order to not get run over by a cage. Oh well, I guess that I'll just have to drive a little more offensively.

Do you Triumph guys know the Triumph factory burned completely to the ground?

As a result, the new bikes are being produced in brandy new pristine environment, with brandy new tooling and machining.

Your motorcycles should have a tolerancing advantage, better build quality overall, and last longer than previous models.

    Enjoy.

I have no issues with quality of the new Triumphs. Everything I have seen is really good in terms of quality and reliability. Besides, a two-year unlimited mileage warranty is a about twice as good as most of the big 4 manufacturer's.

Yesterday I saw the specs on the '03 Daytona and the frustrating thing is that they are going back to the single-sided swing arm. Maybe that's why the '02 is so heavily discounted? They also went back to a 190 rear tire from the '02's 180, which they claim was done to quicken the steering without loss of traction.

I seem to recally that Triumph has gone back and forth from Single to Traditional at least twice on the Daytona model since inception. Not sure what's up with that!?!? I think that this is a matter of what is seen and read having been put together by sales & marketing people who only give the potential positives without the whole story. I wonder if the traditional swing-arm has to do with the plant fire?

I do like the single-sided on the VFR for ease of maintenance, but I know that most manufacturer's claim that double is more rigid and weighs less, so I guess that's a good thing. I did get used the the single-sided very quickly though.

Well, it so happens that I am a mechanical engineer...Here's my understanding:

If you can imagine a swing-arm from the top looking down, the shape of both sides, plus the axle, and the pivot point creates a "rigid" box shape. A single-sided is like a cantilevered "L" shape. It takes a lot more metal to make a "L" as strong as a box.

Ducati used to use single-sided on the street bikes and double-sided on the race bikes.. not sure if they still do it that way, or not.

I also imagine that a double-sided arrangement is a lot less expensive to manufacture and bearings and everything are more readily available. The VFR's single-sided arrangement has some really funky bearings and chain adjuster arrangement.

Wasn't commenting on any tolerancing issues due to the history of the company, simply that whatever is was before, now they have new tooling thus (hopefully) sharper knives for tighter tolerance cuts.

If you're putting 146 to the ground, I like ya!

Legalspeed - I did not it take it as any kind of slam against the brand, or its history. I know lots of people who owned Triumphs back in the '70's and early '80's who had the reliability and leaking issues - but the fact is that they loved those bikes anyway. They had (have) character and style. Add to that 147 bhp and I'll be happy whether riding or wrenching - its all part of the game.

    Does that sound sappy?
