I have a zumo 550.
I do not have a bluetooth headset that fits under my helmet.
I have been using headphones to the Zumo for music and directions.
Is there a way to use headphones with a mic to use the phone? The headphones plug into the audio out channel, so I wouldn't think so, but I dont want to have to buy a bluetooth headset as well.
Any ideas appreciated.

Thats what the smaller input plug is for on the cradlle IIRC, a 2.5mm mic.

So would I need 2 wires? One headphones and one for the min?Originally Posted by ssg

Yessir, double check with the manual but there are "zumo mic kit's" out there for sale by garmin and I believe thats why. Mostly because some people had the Zumo routed through the autocom, etc.
It is not worth it.
I got the Jabra and tried many times to get it to work. I got the expensive Shure earplugs with PTT microphone.
Big issue with BT is that every time you are near a car with some star trek geek with the BT earpiece, you lose the signal, sometimes you get it back, sometimes you don't.
I tried using it for music and that was even worse.
I now put the phone on vibrate, if I have a call and IF I want to take it, I pull to the side and look at who called.
The technology is not stable enough yet.
If loud pipes save lives, imagine what learning to ride would do.
In his first post he said he doesen't want bluetooth, he is asking about a wired gig...why do people keep offering BT suggestions? Did Stoneman start this thread or something?
Try a Motorola BT headset...they wrote the book on RF. Maybe not noise cancellation and auto volume leveling, but the shit stays connected I don't care who is nearby.
As far as Music streaming over from a BT GPS - if it wasn't a Zumo 660 you're wasting your time with crappy mono sound over an 8khz sample rate, think landline connection...A2DP is the audio streaming protocol now supported with newer units, this will get you decent sound quality.
Connectivitywise I've had 0 problems with my Cardo Scala wireless kits, but they suck for listening to music.
As for the best wired/wireless connection, what I do is rock Etymotic ER6i's plugged into an ipod or whatever, and have the phone paired to zumo and zumo paired to Cardo ScalaRider2 in my helmet. Have the shit cranked up - hear phone ring, pause music, say hello and I'm good. Only wires I have are the ones in my ears from the ipod in my jacket, controlled wirelessly with a Monster RF remote clipped to my left wind deflector.

I have Zumo 660 and 550, and although the 660 supports streaming full rate audio, you still need plumbing to get that into your ears without wind coming between the source and your eardrum if you want good sound...so I don't even bother.
One thing I noticed as well is that Honda is using the last-gen Zumo as the OEM unit on their new VFR as the nagivation solution...looks like it has some kind of OEM thumb controller though....might be worth looking into for source control as well if you wanna keep hands on the bars.

screw the bluetooth, get an Autocom hardwire the Zumo to the Autocom and use cable to helmet, it doesn't interfere with your riding.

Bingo.
Do that with their earbud adapters and have the best of all worlds.
I would have done this but I hate the 'one long cord' and having this big control module either floating from bike to bike or having to stick it somewhere with the umbilical cords sticking out underseat or whatever.
using one autocom for several bikes is a problem, its really meant to be at least semi-permenent installation, I've built cable harnesses, custom lengths, hidden, runnning along frame, to custom gps mount, cables to 2way, radar, etc. also, a bluetooth module to pair with my cell phone (my Zumo is a 450)
its all setup under the seat, I haven't touched it in 2 years since I first set it up, I'm using the standard headset (2 speakers, boom mic & noise sensor) in a Shoei TZR, stereo mp3 clear as a bell cruising 80mph in highway traffic, cell phone rings, mp3 auto mutes, you answer, have your conversation ( I can hear my cell phone better thru the autocom @80mph than I can thru the cell phone in a quiet room)
at the end of your conversation, the mp3s resume, radar detector interupts everything
or sometimes I just ride with everything off except the radar![]()

Come visit me and I can show you my Scala rider BT stereo headset and even let you try it out if you want.
It works great for the phone, but as far as the radio, not so great. I am about to try out an mp3 player instead for my music.
BTW... If you get pulled over with in ear headphones under your helmet you will most likely get that ticket.
At this point, I would challenge the earphone ticket.
Massachusetts requires you to use a hands free device for calls in your vehicle. That's what a bluetooth headset is for.

helmet speakers are prohibited to use or possess in MA
