VT Bike Night Memorial Day Weekend mini-trip?

    Hey kids.

As you may recall if you've been paying attention to any of the discussions about building on Bike Night, one of the suggestions I made is to do occasional short 2-3 day trips for people who want to get out of the immediate area and ride some awesome roads we don't generally get to play on.

Memorial Day weekend (May 29-31) would be perfect to do one of these. Here's what I was thinking.
Saturday: back roads from Burlington to Derby Line to Quebec City to Tadoussac.
Sunday: various awesome roads along the St Lawrence and in the Saguenay region.
    Monday: back roads back home.

We'd camp at night to keep costs down.

    Anyone interested? Opinions?

Hm, I might be interested in this, assuming it doesn't get too cold at night that time of year up there since my sleeping bag isn't as warm as I would like. I don't have any other plans at the moment, but that could change.

    This is 3 months away.

I'm going to chalk up this thread to your German need for planning combined with a healthy dose of cabin fever.

It's not that much further north, and it'll nearly be June. Shouldn't be too cold at night.

I'm not asking for commitments -- the point was to take some action on one of the suggestions made during recent Bike Night planning discussions and see what people think of it. What I want to know is whether people are even interested in this sort of thing, and laying out the basics of an actual trip works a lot better than just a vague concept. It makes it a lot more real. (I haven't worked out a full route or anything though.)

At the same time, if someone is excited about this idea, they've got plenty of time to make sure they're free Memorial Day weekend. Advance notice might be helpful to people who might not get the whole weekend off, for example.

True, I guess I'm used to camping out west where we still were in areas that still had snow in August.

Yeah, we're probably more likely to encounter freezing temps in West Virginia in mid-May than in Tadoussac at the end of May.

I would be in for the ride!! Sounds like fun! Does every one have their passport if not, you should think about getting one so that when trips like this do get planned, we don't have to worry about staying in the states

Well clearly we aren't that worried about staying in the states since the destination of this ride is in Canada.

That's why you need a passport silly!

Excellent point -- anyone who is interested in this trip and doesn't yet have a passport should apply for one ASAP. It can take a while to actually get the passport (as much as 6-8 weeks, depending on how busy they are), so don't leave it till the last minute.

Or... if you don't plan on any international travel via flight anytime soon you might consider the enhanced VT driver's license which allows overland travel into Canada and is slightly cheaper (although a passport is good for 10 years... so just get one!).

True... but last I heard, you need to go to the DMV office in Montpelier to get the enhanced driver's license. Or have they rolled them out to all DMV offices now?

Edit: seems they're available in Burlington and Rutland now too.

Anyone who's thinking of coming along on this trip who doesn't have a passport, you might want to take care of that now. Apparently passport fees are going up in a couple weeks.

Details? My passport is expiring in July and if I'll save some money I'll renew it now.

It was on the news last night. Apparently fees are going up by something like $35 in a few weeks. Don't know if this applies to EDLs or only to actual passports/passport cards.

Technically they're currently in a public comment period, but it's the federal government -- what that really means is, "We're required to have a public comment period, but we're going to ignore everything you say until we can actually raise the prices."

Well kids, I guess it's a good thing this trip didn't work out, as there are massive wildfires raging perilously close to the route I was planning. If it was this smoky in Vermont today, just imagine how bad it would be up there.

Ironically, the old Key Bank building on Main St in Barre VT was cooking when we went through.

I bet that fire had more spectators than the parade did this morning.

Aye. When I rolled through earlier the coppers had Main St blocked for the parade and what not...I saw a fraction of the people then as we saw on our way home.

And that building is right there too. Guess it's better it went up after the parade instead of during.

My friend Dan and I managed to just barely finish our lunch at Fandangles in North Conway, NH, after riding the Kanc before we were ushered out and watched the place burn down before our eyes. At least I got that last burger...
