Any tards running a 5.5 rear?

    Hi Guys,
I am considering purchasing a set of motard wheels for the YZ. The set I am looking at is a 17x3.5 front and a 17x5.5 rear. The front is very common. The rear seems to be very wide. The guys says that these fit an 06 YZ450F with out rubbing using a 520 non oring. My gut is saying that I should stay away from these because the rear will be too wide. What tire would I run on this anyway, 180? That seems too wide. What do you guys think?

Thanks for the advice in advance.

    Nathan

search this topic on supermoto junkie .... or ask there you will get a wealth of info... seems wide as most 160 tires show signs of rubbing
    Where in NH are you?

You're not going to just bolt that one on and not have to worry about anything. I have a 5" rear on my YZ, 160 tire and a 520 non O-ring chain and I had to space the sprockets 1/16", use a Graves chain block and even had to shave a bit of the tire with a block plain. I have less than 1/16" clearance between the tire and chain.
Also, I don't even see you getting that in the swingarm without a major pain in the balls. The 5" with a 160 is a pain as it is.
While I think it would look killer on the YZ, I'd stay away from that sized rim

I have already asked at SMJ. I am just trying to get a few different opinions.

    I am in Nashua.

    Thanks,

I don't know the bike specifically, but I did a bunch of searches on sizes for rims when I bought new ones and the general consensus was 5.5 too big.

There's no way it's going to fit in a stock swingarm. I'm maxxed out with the set up I have as far as room. I also forgot to mention that when my wheel was laced up, it was set up offset from center to reduce the chain rubbing issues.

This picture may give you an idea just how close it is?

I don't know how people do it, I have a 5.0 on my crf as well and don't see how I'd go bigger really. I almost bought a crf already in supermoto form that had a 5.5 rear but I never got to see it in person before it drown to death.

yeah, I'm with stupids. Can't see anything beyond a 160 fitting on a typical motard. Some 160's (Power Race for example) won't fit without a fair amount of coercion. I wouldn't really be too stoked about putting a 160 on a 5.5" rim... Seems like you're already leaning towards passing on the deal. I would.

Both Mark R7 and Seth would find out that "most" Tire company slicks Run a Little narrower then DOT's. a 160 slick would fit better then the Dots they are running. Street tires (corsa III, Pilot powers ect) alway Run the widest. That being said I dont see any benifit to a 5.5 Rear that would still be a Pain to deal with.

Eric had a 165 Dunlop on the RMZ. Some chain rub, but not a ton.

Why you splitting hairs Dolla Bill?
KR108's are quite a bit narrower (at a listed 165 width) than a Power Race (at a listed 160 width). As the squirrell of darkness points out must slicks are narrower than their DOT counterparts. I'm just trying to keep things simple. I'll stab you.

When Seth Had His Diablo DOTS mounted at Tricky Mikes we measured the Mounted DOT VS the Dunlop 165 Also Mounted And the Diablo was MUCH Wider

Re: Any tards running a 5.5 rear?

So, it sounds like I should stay away from the 5.5 inch rear. That is what I thought. Kirk from factory pro says that a 5.5 rear will fit. I am not conviced yet.

I do currently have a set or tard wheels and the rear is a 17X4.25. I guess I will just stick with these for the time being unless anybody can change my mind.

    Thanks for the help guys.

I dont think The wheel is the issue, Its the tire You put on it. I Dont know what the profile of a 160 Slick would do on a 5.5

Re: Any tards running a 5.5 rear?

    Yeah, I'd pass, personally...
It might fit, but I don't really see the point. It's not so much whether a 5.5 would fit, it's that a 180 tire has no chance of fitting, and isn't needed for a bike putting out motard HP... and mounting a 160 on a 5.5 would result in a flatter profile that the manufacturer hadn't intended. The net result would be that for the additional unsprung mass due to the wider rim and hassle trying to squeeze it into the swingarm you get no reward. Unless, of course there's a legit reason for running the 5.5 and flattening out the profile of the rear tire. I dunno Is this one of those fast guy mods?

Re: Any tards running a 5.5 rear?

Any chance the tilres buldge will be decreased by squeesing the 160 on a 5.5 and give yo a little more clearance. Come to think of it. I have seen Alexs rear rim (not a 5.5) and it is all beaten up from the chain. Going wider is going to create more of a problem.

Degsy mentioned to me that he put a 160 slick on my 600 rr and it was flicken machine. I'don't know if I want to do that.
