Re: Continental Racing is here for 2010
I find it hard to believe outside of a handful of guys at Loudon any one of us could tell the difference between tire brands. Some guys might just like the characteristics of a certain tire, but for the vast majority, you could slap any different set on there and go just as well as any other.
Re: Continental Racing is here for 2010
Holy crap it happened, I agree with Richie.
Re: Continental Racing is here for 2010
i started this shitstorm, so i'll get back in...
Quote:
What intrigues me with Conti's are they are under the biggest tire company in the world (General Tire) and have one of the most sophisticated tire testing facilities known to man.
From what I've heard, they have a very, very strong European market and are just getting into the US market, although they are a very fiscally conservative company, so don't expect to see anyone running them for free either.
i'm currently running a set of road attacks. marketed as a "high mileage sport tire" i'll be buyying another set for the street, for sure. i ran your last td on em, too. for the money, $240 shipped, i think i'd be very hard pressed to find a better tire that performs as well and will last as long in the same price range.
i really hope someone supports conti locally. but it's okay, bomo dudes, i'll be buying a set of dragons too.
Re: Continental Racing is here for 2010
im def not here to bash another tire company or peoples opinions on that tire they represent, im in the motorcycle buisness and would like to see any product related to the buisness succeed, how ever in the case of loudon i strongly feel based on what i see that dunlop is the tire that works best, i know riders on that list that would pay the 500 a set for dunlops rather than get tires for free from other tire makers. and without question my opinions are based on the fact that im lucky enough to be surrounded with the top riders in the club and based on their opinions on dunlops they seem to be the tire of choice. And yes you are correct i ride dunlops because rick sets up my bike to perform on dunlop, steve guinard is a great guy does alot for me , when a top guy in the club says theres no question he could get other tires for free but he would rather buy dunlops thats a pretty strong statement.

I don't. Without doing setup you will go different on different tires. That's why I laugh at tire tests in magazines. It all depends on bike setup.
And how many riders at Loudon have their bike set up perfectly for a particular tire brand?

exactly my point. whatever setup you have will favor a particular tire.
Re: Continental Racing is here for 2010
I think the term "Dunslop" comes more from their street tires sucking. Heard nothing but good stuff about the track tires. I've ridden various bikes with D204s, D207s, D208ZRs. I hardly had any skills back then and I could slide them all on the street without trying. Rode a friends bike at NJMP for a sesson last year with D209s, didn't push too hard but I could tell its a much better tire than any of their street junk.

Wow, Dunlop must be rolling in the dough to supply more free tires than I could imagine to over a dozen guys at a local club. Also the statement about the AMA-spec tires factoring is doesn't mean squat as the DSB spec tire was nothing like the DOT Club Dunlop tires (it was far far worse actually).
Just saying. Stick to the facts, it makes your argument stronger.

Gotta agree. Most of those guys get no better tire deal than A rider pricing.
Re: Continental Racing is here for 2010
I'd love to know how many free sets the top say... 3 riders listed have received over the years.
That's not a dig either, they've earned it. But it does happen, now I'm not saying every set they buy is free.

Pirelli's:
I used to like them, but every single tire discussion that occurs around here turns into a business promo for Pirelli, including ones that are specifically about another brand. I don't like them anymore for mostly that reason.

Careful brother. Liable to be called a 'name-dropper' around here saying shit like that.

how is it free if you buy it?:smash:
Re: Continental Racing is here for 2010
I try to find the delicate balance between shameless promotion and objective commenting.
Do I like Pirellis? Sure, especially the DC3. I tell people that all the time IF they ask for trackday/street tire advice. Of course I promote the Pirelli race tires but I don't use them because I don't race. The last time I raced, the Dragon was state of the art and the Dunlop D207A* was the new wonder tire so I have no personal knowledge of the new tires. I can only go on feedback. I hate it when discussions get crowded with "XXX brand FTW!!!" comments without any reasoning, or little reasoning. I do it myself from time to time, but I still get annoyed by it sometimes too (depends on my mood). I think you're speaking a little tongue in cheek Clayton when you say you wouldn't buy Pirellis because of internet promo here on NESR. The fact is that 2 of the sponsors here on NESR are Pirelli vendors and many members here work for Pirelli vendors makes for a skewed answer to tire questions no doubt. However, I think you choose your tires on a more reasonable basis like cost/performance. You're a thinker and you don't make decisions that way.
At the end of the day, I'm sure whoever becomes your tire vendor of choice will be thrilled with the set of 120/150s you buy every 3 years whether you need them or not (just fucking with ya).
Oh, and PPS216, I have followed Rick's racing for many years and I think he is the most entertaining racer out there to watch. Loved his heavyweight battles with Clarkie back in the day. Once saw him lift the front on his 1000 out of 2 halfway to 3. He is supremely talented and I'm sure he loves his Dunlops. I'm also sure he doesn't run them because a bunch of other guys run them. I'm sure it took careful setup and testing and trying different brands back in the day before he made his decision to run Dunlops. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know. Ask him for us?
I'd love to see Scott Greenwood chime in on this. I'm very interested to see what some of the very fastest Loudon guys think.
derek
