Junior racing Q.

A friend of mine has an experienced Jr. mini bike racer who going to be moving up and we are wondering what the direction of the class is going.

It looks like used RS125's are double the price of a brand new Ninja 250 and they sell off faster than you can send paypal and a new one around $10,000.

Thier plan so far is to get the kid through Penguin school and a few races on a CR 80 motard.

What do you guys see in the future for the JR. class. Are they going to go all 250 4T motards, adopt the new 08' Ninja 250 or will they try to do a GP conversion kit for the 250 motocross bikes to parallel the 450GP single class that is being considered for adults.

I guess they could just keep the cost of getting in way up to keep out the riff raff like mini bike racers and watch the class slowly die off.

Supply and demand. 2 strokes are slowing going the way of the dinosaur, and the ones that remain are going to cost some serious coin. Steve Aspland told me that Honda and Yamaha take orders for customer bikes and one just builds enough bikes to fill the orders while the other only builds enough to fill only some of those orders. A new GP series in Europe drives the price of available bikes up even further.

As far as the future, we'll just have to see what's available and adapt.

USGPRU is THE way to step up. THere are currently 3 AMA pro riders whao are 16-18 year old graduates of the series. 3 have gone to red bull rookies cup. Another has gone to motogp academy.

There will be the US Red bull rookies series next year. Two-stroke are NOT dead. At least the 125. They are harder to get because the popularity is booming.

Those other options lead no where.

Thanks for the link to USGPRU. all of that stuff seems to have been talked about over there. I'm sure your right about 125's not being dead. I think it's just all the action in the Red Bull events has generated a big demand for used RS125's.

I have a friend who is working on starting his 15 y/o son in racing. He bought him a Honda Hawk, and he's done a couple of Tony's Track Days (I think you have to have approval from Tony for such things), and is hoping to have him take the Penguin school in the spring.

The Hawk was a great platform, very forgiving, and very inexpensive. I think the bike was $1,500, all set up for racing or trackdays.

When my daughter gets to be that age, if she has an interest, that will be the route I try to take.

Yes, it is the kid some of you think it is. I'm not throwing names out right now just in case someone thinks some of my questions are a little wacky at times. I wouldn't want someone to think he's a nut like me.
