I really though that whole response was pretty well put together. Especially when you consider the kids history here.
And I'll totally agree metal is fast, there's alot of really subtle things going on at once and it's pretty damn technical, from a musical standpoint. Its pretty easy to see the parallels. It just ain't for me at race time.
I'd have figured you for a lady gaga listener petah.![]()

I used to listen to hard rock/metal to gear me up for fencing tournaments back when I was competing. Comparing the two sports is like apples to oranges unless you take into account the sheer precision and timing of both, in which case they are very similar. I see where Brian is coming from, and as a musician can really appreciate the intricacy of good metal (the stuff that sounds like someone banging garbage cans around does not fall under that category), and focusing on that put me in the right frame of mind to be able to dissect an opponent's moves at the speed I needed to in order to succeed. I also would unwind after a rough bout with classical, then car-dance/celebrate on the ride home with some pop and/or techno depending on what others could tolerate.. Definitely the most diverse playlist on my team, haha!!

I can see how my comment could be taken that way but the tone in my head at that time was way more joking... I'm actually surprised you're the only one to mention it. I expected to come home to the entire forum bashing me for being arrogant and out of line...
This just made the whole thread worth it for me... Painkiller is by far one of the best and I was going to put One Shot at Glory on my list because right before I came in and started the thread I was sitting by my R6 listening to that very song! New respect for Gino...
Back on the topic, I understand that everyone has different musical tastes, but it kind of surprises me that some of you guys aren't getting into an aggressive state of mind before a race... seems like alot of people just want to be calm and have a clear mind. That's what metal does for me in a way... it kind of shuts out all the anxiety and fear and also adds a tinge of aggro/competetiveness that I think I need before I go out. The music is never in my head while on the track though... which brings up another topic: anyone ever ride w/headphones on? I've never done it and don't think I'd want to on a motorcycle, but I have on a mtn. bike and it was pretty badass.

I used to listen to music to get pumped before races. This past season, I stopped. I sit in a chair, close my eyes, and run laps in my head. I would just breathe slowly, calm down. Try to get out there with a clear mind.
My adrenaline spikes as soon as I'm in a battle with someone. My main concern in a race is being smooth and consistent, not amping myself up.
MTBing, however - I almost never ride without music. Hard stuff. I need to be physically pumped up to MTB. I need mental clarity to turn fast(ish, for me, whatever) lap times on a motorcycle.

I think you'll be hard pressed to find anyone who would say listening to music WHILE you're racing is in any way an okay thing to do.
I know of one or two people who used to listen to jams during practice, but as far as I know, that's as far as they took it.

Me too!
I'm also with the sit back and mellow crowd. Visualize everything I want to do
and most of all conserve energy, I need it all to finish the race. Of course when your 57 you HAVE to. BUT we are all different, you do what is best for you.
I would only suggest you get into a routine and repeat it every time. (assuming nothing is going wrong). If you ever played any serious golf I know you can relate. Hurry up April I'm already visualizing.
Me too, no aggressive state of mind before a race. In the past, the more aggressive and/or angry my state of mind was the more mistakes I was likely to make out on the track. Now, I'll sit/stand in the garage and just stare out into the paddock at nothing, just breathing slowly and getting into a calming state. Maybe I'll focus on a or two corner, or visualize some change in riding style I'll try during the race, but always in a calm meditative state of mind. I find that the more calm I am just before and during a race, the easier it is to deal with whatever is happening on the track during the race -- like the events in the race are unfolding in slow motion -- and the faster my lap times will usually be. As Doug1611 said, we are all different and one size doesn't fit all; indeed, your mileage may vary with this advice.

I'm learning something from this... I've been told by fast sources that you can't go out there all tensed up, grittin' teeth, frothin' at the mouth, and expect to go fast...

I'm a trackday rider and while I don't listen to music to get all pumped up I do have some techno/trance music I like to listen to because it has a certain flow that is both calming but reminds me of dancing with the bike and the transitions at nhms.

Even after bumping to amateur I kept the same attitude I had as a novice. Go as fast as I think I can and get by whoever is in front of me. Points never crossed my mind while on track. Sitting back and going easy at the back of the amateur pack is only gonna get you one thing, lapped by the experts faster. And you certainly aren't gonna learn to go faster if you don't try.
Yeah but if it puts you in a good mood before the race then I can't see it being a bad thing. Whenever Slayer comes on my ipod while I'm working I turn it up and it puts me in a damn good mood. And then I have to look at the speedometer and slow down.

I'm sorry, this just made me LoL ... and reminded me of Charles De Mar's (Curtis Armstrong) advice to Lane Myers (John Cusack) in the 1985 movie "Better off Dead" as he's about to take a practice run down the dangerous K2 slopes in preparation for his race ... Charles advises him to "Go that way, really fast. If something gets in your way, turn...."
