    Non-race Report

first off let me start by saying, fuck, fuck, ouch , fuck, ouch, fuck!

yes, after an entire afternoon and one missed practice section i finaly got the NSR running well enough to highside myself to all hell in turn 10..... at 20 mph on my pit out lap. New tires, damp track and a 60 HP, 250lb light switch operated motorcycle seemed to conspire against me. i was bogging second gear just cruising around waitng to test my jetting on the front straight, as i slowly accelarated out of 10 i got caught out by the 7K power jump from 16 HP to 45...., yeah it still isn't running exactly right.

the bike isn't too badly smashed (actually i probably could have had it up and running by Sat with the help of the DNF gang), but mentaly and physicly i was done and i knew it. i would have loved to have hung out the rest of the weekend but i was cold, pissed off and feeling abit discouraged. on the plus side my elbow deffinatly isn't broken. it looks alot worse than it feels.... nothing like the time i hairline fractured my wrist. got abit of a headache but that's probably my fault for landing on it.

in other news my dad's buell seized it's clutch and fried some electronics in his second penguine session of the afternoon. no amount of effort from the DNF gang was going to revive that bike.

so in shortly less than 8 hours we broke both our bikes.... in fact i didn't even make a full lap.... if you count my crash at the end of last season that's 2 crashes in 1/2 a lap. i suck. maybe i should take up go cart racing.... erm, no.
i'll get that NSR sorted if it kills me...and it just might. so far NSR:2 Evil Weasel:0

pics to follow when the guys that took them get back from the track.

Dont feel bad, I didnt even make it through a lap before binning my bike. Had the wrong brake lever on, which didnt fully disengage the brakes, expanded enough coming out of the bowl the brakes locked up, down I go. Now I have no brakes, my rearset is bent and oil is leaking from somewhere.
Im with you, I couldve had it ready for the weekend with friends help, but mentally I was just like screw it, if I cant make it through a practice lap, Im not going through a race.

Yes, no one will need to worry about my "skills" or lack thereof being on the track this weekend, so you have that going for you, which is nice.
On the bright side, I made it home in one piece with no major injuries, so Ill take it.

Couple of questions....what's the service intervals of the bottom end?
    and....has it been done?
seems you are trying to sort out a needle/midrange issue?
You realize they don't really have much power downstairs and do have a tendency to hit like you got rear ended by a truck?
My TR3 didn't make any kind of steam until you wrung it out to over 6k RPM
The Dragbike didn't do anything until 8k rpm..I had to put #70 pilot jets in it just so I could get some kind of response, and was running 320 to 330's for main jets.
You either hate these things, or love them...They are very finicky, and if a cloud comes over the track, they will run differently. Bore scopes are you friend!
With the old air cooled engines, we just pulled the heads and looked inside. easy! Torqued them back down, and off we went, praying of a seizure free day!

Thanks to you and Dan for letting me use the garage space and helping me get the bike set up. Sorry about the crash.

i pulled the engine apart over the winter and everything was within spec...threw in some new rings just because. i'm pretty sure i've got it narrowed down to the jetting. mostly the needles... it runs horribly rich at partial throttle and it's very hard to get up into the power. it revs out fine once you get to WOT.

the biggest problem is i have no where to test. i live right in the middle of town and less than a block from the local police station. i wonder if they would let me test in the seekonk speedway parking lot. i know i've seen go carts and forumla SAE cars testing out there?

When you got the new needles, did they come with the needle jets as well? you mentioned "score" marks on the old ones....Have the slides been replaced? The cutouts will change midrange performance also.
I'm trying to think of a place up here...We used to use an industrial park to test up here.

Make sure ignition is up to par too.

In other news... Pete's eating his words in the Concord Hospital right now... Doh!!! The bad luck lingered a little longer.

I'll let Pete explain, but he's fine minus a broken wrist of some sort.

Yeah, that Pete. The 125 class now runs on track with Super Singles gridded in front and Ptwins in back. I witnessed the incident, and it made for some strange viewing. I came around 10 to see Pete laying on the ground in the middle of the "straight away" while Clayton appeared to be riding TWO bikes at one time. The "extra" bike was attached on the left right at the hanlebars making it a little tough for him to tip in to 11.

I didn't see him apply any brakes either as he rode his TWO steeds of into the grassat about 65-70 MPH. He stayed upright while Pete's bike carved a big divot in teh grass until they hit the rain gully between 11 and the NASCAR oval. At that point Pete's bike broke free of Claytons headlock and Clayton cruised around the oval back onto the track.

That was some fancy riding Clayton!!!

I imagine that one came out of ten tight(Clayton) and one wide (Pete) and their lines converged as they approached that first apex curb that's on the left. This is a classic Loudon mistake. Those two lines don't mix well...

Wow. Chalk that up to something you don't see everyday. Sort of like the BBQ R6 on Saturday. Went from 2006 badass bike to a big hunk of shit in about 45 seconds.

Hey Evil Weasel I'm pretty sure I saw you driving up Route 24 on Thursday around 5pm. I was going Southbound and had my RMZ and TTR in the back.

Yup. Pete typically runs a wider 10 and early apexes 11, I do the opposite and run 10 tighter in 1 lower of a gear and go for the straight line deep into 11. It was pretty much bound to happen eventually. Sucks that it worked out the way it did, nobody wants to go through that.

Paul, my ass end wasn't exactly going straight, or so it felt, so I didn't dare get on the brakes. I had my exit strategy planned out, I just figured I was going to go down. Man was I tickled pink when I stopped with both tires on the ground!

And my bike now has LOTS of turf stuck in it from my landing in the grass.....

The grass is from bottoming in that rain gully. I saw turf flying over your head! That's when Pete's bike broke free. It stayed on two wheels for a while as well!

I recommend trying to use Pete's line through there. You're running the literbike line on a 50HP machine! There's tons more speed you can carry by getting on the gas hard BEFORE the airfence and holding it wide open all the way to the first apex cone. You'll be knee down before the cone, and can use lean angle to scrub speed instead of hard braking stright up and down.

From 10 into 11 there is no straight. The stand it up to brake line often ends with two bikes in the grass.

I was corner working 12 (my first time cornerworking) and saw this whole thing!
I thought Clayton was a goner, dragging Pete's bike... one of the more experienced workers saw it too and was like "Oh God , NO!" If that gives you an indication of how scary it looked. You should have seen how big Claytons eyes were when he finally came up on the pavement without his second bike in tow. Pete was laying way off in the grass in early 11 and being a new corner worker I thought the guys in 10 were supposed to get him, (little did I know they only had a flagger in 10) after I got his bike up and to the wall, I looked to go check on him but the ambulance was already there. I was glad to here it was only a broken wrist.
For my first weekend I think I saw it all.
