I've been slowly getting the safty wiring done on the YZ426, only broke 3 drill bits so far![]()
So far, i've got the 3 oil drain plugs wired, the 6 oil line bolts, oil fill stick, coolant drain bolt, header bolts, exhaust hanger bolts, rear axle, front axle locking bolts, counter shaft sprocket, and prolly a few other things that i'm forgetting.. Safty wiring is a bit more fun than i thought it would be![]()
Anyway, i have a few questions...
1st Is there a max lenght the safty wire can span? For example, my oil fill stick on the top of the frame is about 6 inches from the nearest point to attatch the other end of the wire to?
2nd There are 2 oil lines that slip over nipples ( huh huh) and have a regular hose clamp making the connections, does this have to be safty wired? If so, how?
3rd The rear brake calliper, it has a rather odd bolt holding it to the mounting bracket and i don't see any way to drill a hole in it for safty wire. Also, the calliper cannot be removed without removing the rear axle (which is wired) to get the wheel and disc out of the way, do i still have to safty wire this bolt somehow?
and 4th I wasn't 100% clear (i'm a little slow sometimes) on the rule book on the brakes and saw the callipers and mounting hardware mentioned for being wired, my question do i have to wire the bolts that hold the disc to the carrier?
Thanks

I was concerned about safety wiring too. But I was surprised at how lax they were at tech about it. If you THINK something should be wired, do it. It can't hurt to have it done. If you're still not sure, drill the bolts you think MAY need to be done. We can work on that up at my place when you show up. The best way to drill the bolts is with a drill press (thanks Gordon!)...
They generally say not to have the safety wire extend beyond 6 inches. But again, it's usually not a huge deal. Safety wire anything that holds fluids or any mounting brackets/points that looks like they could fall off in an incident...
Just get your ass up to my place Monday as soon as you can to leave us some time to give it the once over...
Did you grit your teeth and try to look like Clint Fuckin' Eastwood?
Or did you lisp it all hangfisted like a fuckin' flower?
From what I have seen on other bikes around the track:
1 - If the nearest attachment point is 6", go ahead and use it. I have seen some safety wire on exhaust canister bolts that is quite long because there is no other closer attachment point.
2 - You should safety wire these. Just run the wire through one or two "threads" of the hose clamp. That will keep the clamp from backing out.
3 - If there's no way the caliper can be removed without removing the axle, which is wired, you will probably be all set.
4 - Most people do wire the bolt that holds the pads in the calipers, even though the pads normally can't be removed without removing the capiler. The bolt is usually pretty small, so it's a pain to drill the hole unless you have a drill press. You are welcome to use mine, but it's unfortunately a long drive for ya.
Jay, i'm leaving rite from work Monday, should be at the crib around 6ish and we can give it a once over.
I'm not so worried about the track day as far as the safety wire goes, the bike is way above and beyond the safty requiremnts of the track days with what i have done now. I just want the major prep work to be done as i put the bike together so i don't have to take things apart again![]()
Gordo, thanks for the offer on the drill press but the DeWalt cordless is doing a fine job. The only time i brake the bits is when i drill through the corner of a bolt (the 12-14mm heads) and the bit starts to come out the other side...
The rear calliper has 1 bolt and 1 pin holding it in place. The pin is fixxed to the bracket so when you take the bolt out, the calliper has to slide to the side to clear the pin. With the disc there, it cannot slide to the side.
This MotoMaster brake setup is pretty wild lookingThe disc is bigger than the ones on my R7, all to stop a 210lb mx bike

After a bunch ofi finally have the tracking number for my wheels, they should be delivered to my work by noon tomorrow. I ended up getting them direct from Excell. There's a story for the good dealer bad dealer sections once i get all my parts

A'ight, Mawk. See ya then, then...

I mounted the braking hardware and the sprocket to the wheels and dropped them off to have the tires mounted and balanced, they sure are purdy![]()

Mark, you're gonna love that thing on the track. It feels like you can't do anything wrong. Sorry I won't be able to join you this year,my motor's in the dumpster.
What happened to your motor? Those things never go bad![]()
Just as my good luck would have it, one of the spacers that came with the front rim was rong, it was 3mm to long. A new set is being shipped out 2nd day air. I couldn't wait, i just had to see them on the bike so i got my grinder out and cut the 3mm off the spacer and put them onI'm gonna scrub the tires in in the mornin on some backroads..shhhhh, don't tell anyone
