Saturday - Race 6 (HWSS) - The smallest grid I'd ever been in. Got a great launch while directly next to the 699 bike but I wasn't about to press the issue going into the chicane for the first time during a race start. Justin takes over first place and I file directly behind him. I catch him coming out of 10 and proceed to lead the race from there on in.
First AM race, first AM start, first AM win!
Saturday - Race 13 (MWGP) - Got another clean start but lost some ground, again, going into the chicane. Turned a few decent laps but saw no marked improvement on my lap times. One of the laps I could have sworn the entrance to the chicane was about 10 feet further up so I braked accordingly and blowing past the 220 bike of Josh Kruse followed by blowing the first section of the chicanes while trying to haul bike down in order to make the turn. At least two bikes had made a pass in the grass as a result of my mistake, but more importantly, no one went down because of it. Session was red flagged at one point. On the regrid and subsequent restart, I didn't really gain or lose anything as a result. Placed 6th overall.
Sunday - Race 4 (MWSS) - Still not seeing any improvement on my times, I filied in behind a Ducati for the first few laps and just as I set up to pass he signals for pit-in which gave me a freebie. The pack of 5 lead bikes had checked out in the mean time so I managed the remainder of the race and placed 6th once again.
All in all it was a pretty good weekend for my first run as an AM. I got to see first hand how incredibly fast the experts are and it's really quite fun getting passed by those guys.
The chicanes were awesome (yes, even on a 600)! That banking really takes some getting used to but it was a welcome challenge to learn the new section. Props to the people in charge of the setup of that section. Too bad we can't keep it as an alternate or even an additional configuration.
Thank you to all the people who have helped in whatever way they can to bring me up to speed....even if it's a high five, fat lip or talking my ear off, it all means alot and keeps my drive going.
Thank you Duncan Moto, Boston Moto - Pirelli and Zip-Tie Alley Racing. Your support is always outstanding and unwavering!
Finally, a huge thank you to all who decided to take their internet grudge to the track this weekend. I can now see what kind of stand up people you really are.....haters.
