    When to Adjust Valves?

I just rolled 15k on my 04 ZRX and was wondering when I should think about checking the valves...

    Re: When to Adjust Valves?

    yes.

if at low throttle inputs it gets a bit choppy, or you feel vibration you didnt feel when it was new, or if it doesnt start as easily as it used to, or all sorts of things. If you've never done it, it definately does not hurt.

    Re: When to Adjust Valves?

I just checked the valves for the first time on my 15k Triumph 955i. All of my exhaust clearances were too tight.

So... now is a good time

Ahh ok thanks guys. Looks like I will have to get some shims and read up on it. And take the street bike out of commission for a little bit.

If you are hard on the bike you are overdue

MY last Yamaha said 26K but every valve needed it at 12K

shims come in 2 diameters know which kit you needd

I gotta do the SV as well. There are kits you can buy ahead of time instead of checking and then buying the one needed? That helps a great deal.

    Re: When to Adjust Valves?

Shims are expensive! $5-14 depending on where you buy them. And sized in quarters of a MM. Some dealers will trade you shims for your old ones (plus a couple bucks).

And, you may find that you can move some shims from one valve to another depending on what size is needed. This will save you money!

In other words, don't buy them until you know which ones you need!
Otherwise you're going to be wasting a lot of them.

Before doing ANYTHING, measure your tolerances.

You may not need to change a thing!

This is what I had figured. Just sucks to have the bike down on a weekend and maybe have to wait till the next weeked to get it back together.

OR.... because the values will generally get tighter over time, you use a piece of plate glass and wet/dry paper and sand down your existing shims to the exact size you need. This in combination with the swap between values method prevents a bunch of runs to the dealer.

    Re: When to Adjust Valves?

Why wait to see what you need before you buy them, and then be at the mercy of the dealer or have to order them online and wait?

    Go here:

    http://lukesracing.com/Merchant2/mer...gory_Code=HCSK

And buy these for the ZRX:

    Refil Shim Package 9.48mm OD x 2.40-2.65mm
    Code: HCSHIM11
    Price: $28.00
    Quantity in Basket: none

    Refil Shim Package 9.48mm OD x 2.70-2.95mm
    Code: HCSHIM12
    Price: $28.00
    Quantity in Basket: none

Free shipping for orders over $50. You get more shims than you'll need for $56 shipped.

btw - I am not affiliated with Luke's Racing - I just bought shims for my ZRX there.

I have a complete shim kit that fits your bike and would be happy to swap with you. Just bring your old shims and a list of what you need.

It's an SV 650 right? The SV1000 takes different shims. Mine only fit the 650. sory if I got your hopes up.

    Re: When to Adjust Valves?

The last 2 times I did valves they all needed smaller so little swapping could occur.

IF you know a machine shop with a surface grinder then you can take down your current ones

Sounds like a "Show me your shims, I'll show you mine" kinda deal. Glad my bike's only got 5K on it. Don't NEED no shims. Course, dunno if a Concours/ZX14 uses shims. Dunno shit about bikes. How do you peeps do it, with the keepin' yer bikes runnin? Jesus H., just to get enough fairing off to check the battery vexes me.
