    bike wont start :(

    2006 TTR50e

At first i thought it was the battery. Charged it up. its reading 12 something volts right now. Then i thought it was the fuse. The fuse was showing open even though the fuse was in place. Threw a new fuse in. Then i thought it was the starter switch. Pulled the switch apart. still nothing. It doesnt even bother to try to crank what so ever. im out of ideas

    *sigh*
it always comes back to the basics.

does it have spark? (pull plug, lay against head and crank) maybe it needs a plug, who knows

does it have fuel? (did the plug come out wet or dry? did it at least smell like fuel?)

does it have compression? (i'm going to presume it does as this is the least likely problem)

If it's not even spinning over, check wires -- ground, ignition switch, battery terminals, etc. Does it have power to the starter?

    Re: bike wont start :(

oh whoa sally, you need to clarify your terms.
    you mean it doesn't crank..
try jumping power directly to the starter. if that works then the starter solenoid is suspect.

if that doesn't work, your starter is shot.

or you aren't describing the problem well enough..

Well yeah, but I have seen more than one person say "I pulled the switch apart and there's no corrosion it's just a little white inside."

    Re: bike wont start :(

i had a bright idea today while unloading the bike from the trailer. how about checking the engine kill switch. flipped both ways no start. disassemble switched and now it cranks.

plug looks a bit shot. tried cleaning it up. i can get it to start shortly then it dies. although i could of sworn i had alot more gas in there when i left vir. so right now im thinking im at a air fuel ratio problem.

So did you remember to shut off the gas at the petcock valve?
When you say VIR, I'm asuming you mean a few weeks ago, not a few months ago right?
Fuel gels quickly and those jets are tiny. They clog very easily.

I kinda asumed you understood that they are in the same housing and opening it up means you check/clean both.

At least you can laugh at yourself. Pretty funny... I'm sure most of us have done it at some point. I have just trained myself over the years to check the simplest things first no matter how unlikely it may be that that's the problem.

on the ttr50 the start switch is by the throttle where the kill switch is by the left hand grip. they are 2 completely different units
