The real good alignment tools measure from center of swingarm pivot point to center of axel on both sides.

Clamps on top of the sprocket and you sight down the rod to the counter sprocket. Basically sprocket center to sprocket center. I've put a longer rod so it sits just above the counter sprocket for better accuracy.

I just spin the wheel and let the chain show me if I'm lined up sprocket wise... the chain will sit to the left or the right on the back of the sprocket depending on which way you're off. If it's centered, the sprocket is riding the chain evenly, aka you're lined up.
