    Red face DiD chain help.

I wanted to wait until I came back from vacation to do the chain replacement on my 08-SV650 but it seems like it might need the replacement earlier than that . I was wondering if you guys can help me choose between

the DiD standard 525 chain (120 links) or the DiD 525 VM2 Premium Chain..

I'm not sure how much of a difference it would make. I would definitely want to invest more money if it would effect the performance and improve the ride by a significant margin. But at the same time I would like to save some money as well.

Please let me know if you guys have a choice for me. Also, let me know if Renthal/Vortex sprockets are better as I would like to replace the sprockets as well. Thanks.

You wont notice the difference between those chains. You would notice a slight difference maybe if you went to a 520 chain seeing as you are changing sprockets also.

I prefer rental over vortex, but that's personal preference.

Thanks. I was pretty much set on going with Renthal. This confirms it. Right now I'm stuck between getting the standard roller chain and cleaning it for every 150 miles or getting the premium x ring and maintaining it once every 300 miles.

    Re: DiD chain help.

You don't need anything fancy, but at least get a sealed chain. You really don't want to deal with the hassle of cleaning & lubing a chain every 150 miles.

For sprockets, you prob won't notice much difference between brands.
But consider going with a 520. The SV won't wear it out all that much quicker than a 525.

You asked about performance and ride, not longevity and maintenance.

Performance and ride wise you wont notice a difference. As long as you don't mind a bike covered in oil, get the standard chain. The vm2 won't need maintenance every 500 miles either, maybe every 1000 unless it gets really wet.

    Re: DiD chain help.

I remember talking to Ted about this. He did not like the idea of going with a 520 instead of a 525. I usually stick to the idea that stock = tried and tested = good. But if you say that this will make it a better ride for me then I will consider it. Although I like the handling and the ride at higher speeds, I feel that I could get used to some extra low end acceleration.

Pardon my ignorance but Bike covered in oil? That sounds scary. If by covered in oil... you mean the standard chains are not like the o-rings or x-rings and will splash lube everywhere then maybe I will consider going with an o or an x ring chain. Cleaning every 1000 miles sounds like a good idea. Yes performance and ride were mainly my concerns. But, I just remembered reading that X rings seal the lube better and wanted to ask. Thanks.

    1. Ted's an idiot for telling you that. (just kidding. It's a matter of opinion, but your SV isn't gonna even be close to pushing the limits of a 520 did vm2 chain. )

    2. Non sealed chains are for dirtbikes and old harleys. Get the vm2 :-)
