    Another Chain Help Question

    I have a 05 Honda Cbr 600rr with a little over 10,000miles. Recently I noticed a little bit of "slipping" when under acceleration and shifting gears. I did a search and found that more then likely my chain is loose. I had about 2 inches of freeplay in it. I have never adjusted my chain or any chain for that matter before. I looked in the manual and was able to figure it out. However after lubing I started it up on the stand and let the bike idle so I could watch the chain in action. Something just doesn't appear to be right. Is there anything I should know about like any tricks to make sure every thing is alligned? Anyone near Beverly that wants to show me the right way? I only need to be shown once. I could use a hand because I really don't want to F anything up. Thanks

    Because of the play in the cahin, it isnt going to look smooth when it is idling in gear on a stand, it wll jerk around.

    There are indicators on the rear of the swing arm to show the settings of the rear axles. mage sure those are EVEN, and have the chain set with the amount of sag recommended and you should be set.

    Thank you. However I found when measuring that the indicators are off about 1/8th inch from each other. After some searching I guess this isn't all that uncommon. The jerking of the chain is what was bothering me. I clean and lube it on a regular basis but had up until now never adjusted it. I am going to try the string method to make sure the tire is straight.

    Is the rear sprocket stock? If it is, 10K miles is probably fine. If it's an aftermarket Vortex or other aluminum type it could be cooked. Your manual should have measurements for chain tension (which you did) but also chain length (to check how much it's stretching). It's unlikely that the rear tire moved so the fact that it's loosening means it's stretching. Stretching is normal to a point but eventually the chain will no longer sit properly in the sprockets. Sprocket wear and chain stretching out of spec will mean time to replace both (2 sprockets, 1 chain). That said, like xrocket21 said, with no load on a rear stand your chain will bounce all over the place.

    how did you measure the indicators to determine they were off? a tape measure or ruler isnt that accurate and could possibly yeild your 1/8th inch overshoot.
    if you align them so they match, you should be okay, or use a set or calipers (recommended)

    This does not sound like your chain. If you have a bit too much slack you will get a lil snap or jumping sensation. If you are getting actual slipping (RPM's going up and not moving) You need to look into your clutch. Where is it grabbing/is your cable set too tight? Is it only when its hot(your oil might not be the proper weight)? If all that is good it might be the actual clutch plates.
    Really look into what you are describing and how it feels.

    When I checked at the mid point I had over 2" of slack. the manual said it whould be 1 1/4. I have it in that spec now. I double checked everything and think I have it right. I remeasured the indicators with a caliper and they ARE correct. I guess I will know when I take it out if I did it right. Thanks for the help

    I read the second sentence in the original post & can't help from wondering why he's asking about his chain.

    It doesn't matter how loose the chain is, you're not gonna feel any slipping... if it's jumping teeth you're gonna friggin know it, it won't be a little slip.

    check your clutch cable adjuster. if you or anyone else played with it at all it could not be grabbing completely and under high rpm it will slip. hell your plates could be garbage, but i wouldnt expect that at 10k

    Depends on drivin habits and proper oil... Your engadge point can change at hotter temps depending on viscocity.
