    winters in the basement?

ok, so i know some of you jokers store your bikes in the basement over the winter, Looks like the house Keira and i are looking at has no place for a garage, so i would like to know how you all get your bikes into the basement, it is not a walkout, but does have a bulkhead with a very stable stairs... can it be done or am i asking for the bikes to get dropped down the stairs and wrecked, as well as myself...

PS: we are buying a big shed to keep them in all summer, but for the winter we would like to get them inside for real.

A friend of mine sets a plank over the stairs guides his bike down for the winter then rides up (don't forget to duck) in the spring...

It wasn't me I didn't do it (unless you have the negatives to prove it)

that probably would be a lot easier.....but the house isn't too big, so maybe not til the basement becomes the family room

how does he secure the plank? i would be afraid of it slipping out... how much traction does he get with the brakes on the plank, i would want to go pretty slow. but the basement would be a great place to tear the bikes down over the winter and do some maintenance.

My cellar stairs are way too steep, they go in the kitchen.

    Re: winters in the basement?

My R7 always stayed in the basement when I lived in my parents basement. 2 people and a 16' plank to get it in the basement, and 3 people and a 16' plank to get it out.

I had all my bikes in my basement last winter. It's not a bulkhead but not a walkout either. There's 5' worth of steps rather than 7' from a bulkhead.

The R1 and R7 were the tricky ones. You need the long plank because of the pivot point from the top of the stairs to the ground outside, sorta like a sea saw? I can get the R1 in the basement myself but I need an extra person to get it out. I leave it in gear and use the clutch as a rear brake so you can have both hands on the bars to keep it in control.

The dirtbikes I don't even use the plank to get them in, just let it ride down the steps. Getting them out, I put one plank in the center for the bike to role up and one next to it for me to run up...though the one I run up I usually drop down two steps. I get a running start (pushing the bike) and just muscle the bike up the ramp.

The quad, I ride it down the ramps and ride it up the ramps. The YZ and Raptor live in the basement full time

    The ramp

What, you don't have bulkhead sliders on that bike?

    Re: winters in the basement?

i use a 4 2x4s nailed together to get my bike in and out of my buddies truck and wood doesnt give that great of traction for braking. I usually just lock the rear wheel with little effort and ease 'er down.
glu some sand paper to it or slap some griptape on there,, should be an easy fix for traction

Go to home depot or lowes and thy have aluminum ramps for trucks. I have a bulkhead with 3 steps so those work perfectly. They're about 5 feet long. If your bulkhead has 6 or 7 steps and is deep those won't work.

I think it is about 6 or so feet deep, but maybe i can get some longer ones. gotta get the house, then i can try some of these things out.

Good to know about the traction with wood, i will have to keep that in mind when i decide on a ramp material.

I nail roof shingle reminants down for traction.. They are cheap and easy to replace when they need it. They also sell actual traction pads for wooden ramps.

shingles are a good idea, and we may even have some available to us via my dad... thanks for the advice.

I covered my wood ramps with skateboard grip tape. Cheap enough and works like a charm. 6 years later it's still going strong.

Or you can paint 'em with regular exterior paint just mix in a grip additive
(think its silica) that they sell in packets at home depot for like $3.
