I have a '85 Suzuki GS700 and for some reason when I gun the throttle the engine revs but there doesn't seem to be acceleration. It works fine if I slowly roll the throttle, but it doesn't seem to have very good pickup. I changed the clutch plates and adjusted the clutch cable so that the clutch lever has about a a 1/4 to a 1/2 inch play. I was wondering if anyone had an idea aboutis going on with the bike.

not familiar with the bike but what about where the clutch cable hooks to the clutch engagement mechanism--is it adjustable--it should be + is most likely the problem(needs adjustment)![]()
I adjusted it in both places. Where the cable enters the case, there's an adjustment bolt which I adjusted and I also adjusted it right at the clutch lever itself. The only other bike I've had was a Suzuki GN400 single which as you could imagine had all the getup and go. Granted, it didn't go very fast (I could go 85 downhill with a good tail wind) but it had some major pickup. I'm not sure if it's because I'm not used to a 4 cylinder or not.

how bout the clutch springs? If the plates themselves are new it could be they're not putting enough pressure on the plates![]()

Yeah, replaced the clutch springs as well. I replaced the clutch plates and springs because it was happening before and it didn't fix the problem for some reason. I'm not sure that it matters, but I stripped out 2 of the bolts on the clutch cover when I was putting it back together. It leaks a little oil, not much to write home about, but drips.

hmm.... weird.... assuming you're not an idiot like Chad& you installed everything correctly I can't see much else that would cause slipage. The plates aren't directional are they?
W/O looking at it, I suppose checking to make sure the clutch cable returns freely is a good idea. It could be that the cable is binding... but that's not likely since it'd be pretty obvious.
Clutches aren't really elaborate devices....
Wet clutch... what kinda oil ya using? Nothing w/ friction modifiers, like energy conserving stuff, I assume?
I can't immagine it would be the flywheel, would it?

Well, I installed the clutch plates the same way they were currently in there. Unless the previous owner installed them backward, it should be fine. As far as oil, I'm using the "Official Suzuki Oil". Figured I'd spend the extra bucks because my gf's mom gave me a $50 gift certificate to SKY Cycle. I hope to heck it isn't the flywheel. That'll be all I need this year. I'm seriously considering just gettin' rid of it and getting a newer crusier or sport bike.

did you soak the friction plates in oil before installing them?
+ don't bother listening to Pete cause he's a moron who really doesn't know shit about much but just likes to answer every post out there to make it look like he does---- + he's a![]()
Unfortunatly no, this is the first time I've ever had to deal with clutch plates. I did not know whether or not you had to soak the plates.

So would I have to take the clutch apart and soak the plates?

Unfortunatly, it's easier to say than it is to do.

might be easier to overfill oil level--lean the bike to the clutchpack side-ziptie the clutch lever to the handlebar(squeezed)-- + let it sit for a couple days--then drain oil + refill to proper level
also make sure clutch engagement at cover IS adjusted correctly
have thought about changing the cable? you seem to have plenty of slack in the cable if what yiu are saying is true. it sounds like the clutch pack isnt closing all the way. nazos bike was doing the same thing at the track and i just put a bunch of slack or freeplay in the cable and that fixed it

Sounds good, I ordered a spare cable on my last order from bikebandit.com so I'll give both options a shot and see what happens.
Thanks a lot for the info!!![]()
