So where around Boston does one buy Helicoil stuff?
Need to repair a stripped bolt hole.
Just got off the phone with Sears and the guy in tools was like...

I know most bike shops can DO the helicoil repair, perhaps they would sell you the materials to do it yourself?

yes, a lot of times you can just chase the thread with the same thread tap. Now what are you up to??
If all else fails, Lean more....
then you need a helicoil drill/tap and the insert itself. Make sure you get the tool to install it too. Usually comes in a whole kit.
Break the tang off after installing too.
Dont use that loctite shit either!

use a Time-sert instead... much better than a Helicoil. It's cased hardened and they are approved for aircraft repairs which i'd trust better.
I have red loctited helicoils in place... why are you saying not to?
And be careful breaking the tang off... don't let it end up in an engine or gas tank.
Time serts are better but not always an option because they have a lip/flange that sits on top of the mounting surface.
If you're doing this in a sealing/gasket surface or other situation where you need the surface to be flush afterwards they don't work. For example, a case cover bolt.

If done properly the Time-sert does sit flush... (meaning you need to use the seatcutter)
A video from the company that makes it... Take a look at first 2 mins and you'll see what i mean.
Also look at the the video at 3:14... another reason why Time-Serts are better that Helicoils (they lock in place and there is no nipple to tap out and maybe get stuck somewhere.)

I can't open that link but I guess you're saying you need to countersink the head of the timesert? I guess that woould work as long as you have enough material... seems like a lot of work though?
Ahh I gotcha. Yeah I just used it to be sure, can't hurt... also because it was in a location expected to see lots of temperature fluctuations...

In one case where I did a helicoil the metal wasnt that thick so the extra loss of material due to to the countersink would have been negated any benefit of the timesert IMO
Like I said can't see the video at work... does sound like a superior in the right application though![]()

About it needing to be case hardened etc.
This is just one of the 9 or so bolts that hold down the gas tank cap assembly.
In someways I think those bolts are mostly a cosmetic look.
They are not torqued very hard and its all into aluminum anyway.
I'd look a alternatives if it was in a strength critical location but
this one seems not.
In fact I'm riding the bike now without the bolt! If its spews gas and blows up
then you write my obituary with all the details!

This bolt holds the gas cap assembly down? Then is it not into the tank and there for steel? Am I missing something?

On the CBR's the tank cover has like 10 bolts and the top and two bottom corners are into the tank to attach the cover. the rest are just cometic and stop in the cover which is Aluminum. I'm assuming it is one of these that got stripped. But if it is one of the major 3 ones they do screw into the steel tank.
You need a 1000.
