OK, I tried doing searches for info on clutches, but every search I did resulted in hundreds of threads that had nothing to do with what I'm looking for.
So, I'll ask this in a new thread...
How do you know when it's time for a new clutch? My cable is adjusted so the clutch if fully engaged and has very little cable tension when the lever is released. I have about 1/8"-1/4" play in the lever when it's all the way out.
But, the clutch is only grabbing when the lever is about 3/4 of the way out and gets a little worse when it's warmed up.
Are there adjustments that a bike mechanic can do that will allow the clutch to grab sooner? Or is my clutch on its way out?
Stop Clutching up those wheelies and you won't have that Problem Chuck..![]()
maybe you need to adjust the clutch
and not the clutch cable, many people think the cable adjusts the clutch.... you should have a locknut on the rod that actuated the clutch, first loosen the cable then loosen the locknut and turn the rod in or out till it is just getting clutch resistance, then back off about an 1/8 turn and tighten the locknut
then adjust the cable

Makes sense. Adjust it so that it grabs sooner when I let the clutch lever out.Originally posted by RandyO

Wheelie? What's that? I haven't pulled a wheelie since I stored my quad more than 8 years ago.Originally posted by josephd14

I was never good at pulling wheelies on motorcycles. Too afraid of landing funny and pulling a nice tank slapper.
To some it looks so damn easy. I was never really good at it.
...or you could swing by my place and I'll adjust it for you, at the clutch end, not the lever. The cable could also be stretched, but a new cable is probably only about $20.
derek
This sounds even better. If the weather's ok this weekend, I might take you up on that. I'll give you a jingle if I do.Originally posted by Degsy

If you do opt to get a new cable, make sure you carry the tools necessary to replace it, with you, all the time, and toss the old cable under the passenger seat as a spare. You'll be gald you did if the cable ever fails far from home. That's where my old cable sits...
1/4 " is too much freeplay. I think 5mm is ideal. Sounds like its definitely the cable. If you do need to replace the clutch, Go OEM all the way. Honda Clutches are good dude. How old is the clutch? If it by some chance ended up being the clutch springs,( probably isnt) then just replace the whole thing and make sure you soak the new plates etc. in fresh engine oil. Just get a new cable dude.

I like to have about 9.83mm of freeplay.
I know a little about everything, and alot about nothing.
If you do the metric to metric conversion, its pretty close to the same.![]()

???????????????????
No seriously, I have my clutch adjusted at the nut on the sprocket cover, and have probably an inch of free play at the handle. Who fucking cares, its personal preference. So I only use half the travel of the clutch lever, whoopty doo.
(As far as fireflys OCD paranoia response goes)

When did OCD become paranoia??
my 5mm-1/4 inch remark got quite the response..LOLolol..
Between 3 &5 i think is a factory spec. I dont remember.![]()

When going 60 in first gear and I wack the throttle, my bike tries to flip over backwards. I have about 3/8" of clutch play. Am I going to die because it is more than 5mm?![]()
