    Male/Female electrical connector

So I have been having electrical problems with the R6....it will suddenly cut off on me/then on/then off.....it is an intermittant problem. Usually happens when I'm out on the track (I cannot reproduce it in the garage).

Well, after hours and hours of playing with the electrical system I found a connection that when I played with it the bike cut out. I unwrapped the electrical tape and found a male/female connector. I think the connection must loosen up/lose contact causing the bike to cut out.

    Summary:

The wire are well connected to the connectors and I don't know if I have enough length left to replace the connectors. So, I want to make sure the connectors don't loosen up from one another in the future.

Any suggestions? Maybe drop some solder in there? If I have to replace the connectors what type of connector should I use?

Looks like two 14 into one 14.

I'm really concerned that if I cut away these connectors I might have a problem reaching or put tension on the connection.

    Here is a pic.

Honda 3 wire 12 GA connector PN 31105-ML8-305. Has about a 6" lead coming off it and comes with solder and heat shrink.

Texas is fan-fucking-tabulous. Cute friendly girls and a track day coming up tomorrow.

BTW - the biggest difference? Since I moved here there have been several stories about someone shooting a burgler. In one case, a guy saw someone messing with his car in the parking lot outside his apartment...he just shot the dude...no problem/no charges against him. I swear everyone is packing down here.

can't just goop it w/ dielectric grease & wrap it w/ electrical tape?

I was thinking of that, but I don't have faith that the electrical tape will hold the connectors together.

Loosing power on the track is just dangerous....it is like hitting the brakes unexpectedly. Then the bike goes on/off/on/off...like trying to ride a bucking bronco while holding a hand up...not cool.

Hold the male end with pliers and push an awl (pick) into the end of it a little to expand it. Test it and repeat until it fits snugly. It looks like it was made poorly.

Wook you move to Texas for what 6 weeks and your bike is
like trying to ride a bucking bronco while holding a hand up.
Glad you are doing well Bud!

you could use the di-electric and shrink wrap it with wire type wrap. if you start cutting in new pieces you are just creating another potential point of failure IMO right now the wires are just loose at the ONE point of connection tighten that and shrink wrap .... done

    Re: Male/Female electrical connector

i would hardwire & permanently join the wires.
i used to always use these little beauties at the shop i used to work at.
a piece of heavy gauge clear heat shrink tubing with a wad of low temp solder in the middle.
looks like a clear crimp butt connector.
Solders and seals the joint the joint air tight .
    works flawlessly.

they cost between 25 and 75 cents per (expensive compared to other solutions) but they are so worth it

or squeeze the female end with some pliers to shrink it. same effect. Female bullet connectors are usually made of sheet metal that is stamped and formed, over time repeated insertions and removals (yes i just said insert and remove) will cause the female side to expand slightly (shut up guys I know what you're thinking). Quick and easy fix. You can do this a couple times before the connector fails completely at which point get some new ones at radioshack and SOLDER NOT TWIST extra lengths of wire onto the old wires to extend them. Twisting new wires on is a guaranteed way to end up with an electrical failure down the road.

You are setting yourself up to be stranded on the side of the road somewhere. Twisting wires together is never more than a temporary fix to get you home where you can then fix it properly. Wires should be soldered and sleeved or have a contact properly crimped onto it.

    Re: Male/Female electrical connector

Kev, maybe you can remove those connectors and replace them with brand new ones. Use the same style connector that way you won't have to worry about wire length. Those look like they just crimp on? If so, maybe you can squeeze the old crimp points to loosen and free up the wire instead of cutting and length off.

Man. don't mundge the wiring on your bike. I've bought bikes before where the PO thought they were a rocket surgeon and rewired the bike. Using the same color wire. Speaker wire...

Take a bit of sandpaper, clean up the contacts, reassemble with dielectric grease, and crimp it tighter with a pair of pliers. That's all you need to do.
