FZ6 stuck in neutral?

The shifter link has come unscrewed (at the transmission end) twice in the 500 miles since the new chain. I just screwed it back in, and the bike won't leave neutral, to first or second. It'll move, but it springs back to neutral.
Took off the shifter link, tried by hand. Same result.

Bike is an '04 with 13k miles. Any input would be appreciated

UPDATE: Fixed it. Bike needed to be running to get it into gear. It was still a hard *clunk* to get it there, but it works

Yup, that's normal, the clash box depends on movement to get things to align. If you're trying to shift with the bike on it's sidestand, good luck. Get the rear in the air so you can rock the wheel back and forth while you work the shifter and it'll work better.
