    So, I need a motor

The CBR blew up yesterday. Haven't torn it down yet, but it sounds a LOT like it threw a rod.
Already have a call into Hobbs to see if they might have anything in the replacement powerplant department.
It's an 05 600RR that had an 03 motor in it.
So, it seems at least between 03 and 05 will work, maybe more? Is there an easy way to check what years will fit in this frame?

The current plan is to buy a used motor, salvage whatever I can of the HRC stuff in the blown motor. A lot of the HRC stuff is in the head and with any luck that's OK.. Also has undercut tranny, shift kit, etc... so that stuff is also probably OK.

Actually, I'm not entirely sure what the point of this thread is....
If anyone has some (reasonably decent) advice feel free to offer it up.

Cool... Not in a huge hurry. I'll probably tear into it this weekend just to get an idea of what I'm dealing with. The real work won't start until I have another motor. Maybe I'll be surprised and my motor won't be THAT bad, but my guess is it's not very likely.

That didn't last long. When you bought that bike I couldn't help but think it would pop. I've had bad luck with any motor built beyond stage1. (except my GPbike, but I did that progressively and adjusted maint to suit each change.

Yeah, I had considered the risk as well. Given how common these bikes are I figured if I ever found myself in this position I'd just swap the motor out for a reasonably priced used stocker and either steal what I can from the go fast parts or sell them to recoup some of the cost. The whole thing is still pretty speculative, though, until I get in there and see what's up. I admit, though, it would have been nice if it lasted longer, but that's the breaks. I feel confident that it was built well. These things just happen.

Never a truer statement with a race motor.

Pretty sure you can also use an 03 - 06 engine in this one since the 05 -06 years are the same.

Let me know if you need a hand with anything. Don't know much but since I helped Degsy drop the motor out of MasterBombs 03RR I have been dying to see the engine tear down. I'll bring some beers

I have found that in most cases it's much easier to block the motor up from below, unbolt it, and lift the motorcyle off the motor.

Not sure ya still care but I am pretty sure anything 03-06 should work depending what kind of fuel plumbing and things you have (if you have any of the other stuff off the 05 or whats been kitted together). I believe some of the feeds were different but the bolt patterns should fly with 03-06.

Re: So, I need a motor

well, I tore the motor down today. Not nearly as bad as I had expected, but it does have some issues. A rod bearing failed and the crank appears to be bent... The rod itself (Carillo) *looks* OK. The bulk of the bearing was still in there and it doesn't appear to have suffered any metal to metal damage. I shut the motor down pretty much immediately when it started showing signs. Any thought on the likelihood that the rod survived? Does anyone have any wisdom about how I could confirm it's OK/not OK? I'm hoping I'm only out a crank and some bearings There are a handful of cranks on fleabay at the moment for under $100.

Re: So, I need a motor

Rod actually looks OK. Crank is bent to shit. I'm considering buying a stock crankshaft ($99 on fleabay), some new bearings, putting it all back together and seeing what it does... I just ordered some plasti-gauge. Gonna put a new bearing set in that rod, squish some plastic and see if the oil clearance is in spec. Honda makes 3 different thickness bearings, so I'm hoping I can get it right... if the largest bearing still leaves too much clearance I'm SOL.

The rod is very likely just fine. They are very tough. Did the piston slap the head a bunch? There would likey be a lot of damage there before a rod would bend as those parts are aluminum vs a steel rod.

Head is untouched by the looks of it. My main concern with the rod is that it's shows discoloration from the heat from that seized bearing. I'm worried it lost it's temper.
