Ou should get it dynod to make sure you don't have a problem that is robbing it of power. At lest you'll have a curve and AF reading. A custom map is the way to go.

Adrenaline cycles is in Swansea, ma. We use them for our V4 Hondas. They are Dynojet approved and we have also used rob at robs dyno. He's good also but a bit far away from you.

A custom map will cost you about $300-$350 maximum. Diagnosing problems MIGHT up that price.

Did you replace the exhaust gaskets with new ones? An exhaust leak or intake leak can cause these type of issues.

Thanks Degs, I did notice the new air filter didn't seem to sit completely right... maybe that's the intake leak? The gaskets were good so I reused them... no leaking has been observed. I'm about to go out and put the stock filter back in and see what happens.

Wasn't the air filter... bike wouldn't idle at all until it reached 145 degrees. Then it starts surging. I've read that there are sometimes issues with throttle position readings on the PC and I notice the readout on te software shows the voltage varying, but the throttle position is 0 when closed. Instructions said not to set the open position because of the ride by wire throttle so that has been left alone at the value that came with the map. So at 0 throttle, the voltage is jumping and when I set the closed position I picked a number right in the middle. The wiring for the PC seems good. I don't know what else to try besides a tune on the dyno so he can set the open throttle voltage when the bike is at the correct rpm and the throttle blades are fully open, but why that would cause a surging idle I can't figure out. I've also read that some people solder the PC wire to the ecu instead of using the provided wire tap, but I'm pretty sure its a good connection there....

It may just be lean at idle with the current map, which will make the ecu 'hunt' at idle trying to calm it down. The PC is supposed to read the ECU's trimmed output and adjust it's mapping to match, but based on my ST3 experience the ECU's temp adjustments seemed to get masked by the PC resulting in me needing a spring and summer map set.

Make sure you have a VERY good ground for the PCIII. Direct to the battery with a star washer preferably.

It is def not the map. Any map off of dyno jets website will allow the bike to idle just fine, might have a flat spot in the mid-upper rpm range . Try disconnecting your power commander to see if that fixs the issue, im sure it will idle fine then. Power commander may have a bad ground or the firmware could need updating, or a bad unit. Only other thing it could be would be air box or block off plates are not sealed completly. 9 out of 10 times its one of the items you touched. but sounds like power commander to me. disconnect it first to elminate that first. Ok, so I got the surging to stop during warm idle by manually taking away some fuel in the idle rpm range... specifically from 8 to 5 in the 0 throttle column. Bike is idling perfect, but it is fully warmed up. Now to let it cool back down and see if it will start up ok and idle with no issues. Funny, because I called Dynojet and the guy told me to add fuel to those columns but it didn't work so I just tried taking some away and voila, it worked! I appreciate all the input guys, will update after a cold start.

you can't use an off the shelf map and take it to the track.

Go get it fixed. I did mine on a fellow racer's dyno (Hoffman). He's skilled, but i'm sure everyone has the "best dyno guy" that works right next door to the "best tattoo artist".

Oh yeah, I'll be doing the custom map for sure, but I just want to make sure everything is good with the new hardware install, and that there aren't any other issues before it goes on the dyno.

Wait wait wait... Brian, you thumbed up my suggestion to richen up the idle, after you yourself proved it wanted LESS fuel?! That's just not right. :D

That was right after I got off the phone w/Dynojet! At least it pointed me in the right direction. Still waiting for the bike to cool completely down to see if it idles cold...

MotoAddiction has a good relationship with some of the yami geeks at dynojet... did you talk to Dusty?

the only experience I have with tuners is RJ's/RPM motorsports in Nashua who did my 929 and it came out awesome. and Dyno Solutions who did my 600 for the previous owner and it was good too. might give Rob a try once I get the bike ready for it.

Leaning it out worked... started right up this morning and idled perfect cold. It got a little weird from 110 to 130 degrees... rpm dropped a little low, then came back to normal after a few revs and the temperature climbed. So there may need to be a few small adjustments but I'm happy, and I think it's safe to say it's good to go o the dyno where it can get dialed in just right. Thanks for the help and I'll be seeing some of you in April!
