I could have sworn that I've read on here that someone (motul, maxmima, amsoil, someone) made brake fluid in "non-clear" colors like red and blue. People would alternate colors when doing a fluid swap so they could be sure when they got to "new" fluid.
1) I sucks at the google today and can't find the thread.
2) I sucks at the google today and can't find break fluid that isn't clear / amber.
Help?
ATE super blue was banned by the DOT last year. Brake fluid must be any color you want as long as it's yellow. Might be some out there for "off-road use only".

ATE makse a blue fluid, but it's almost impossible to find right now.
I've also found out it stained the shit out of everything so it wasn't as easy to see the switch to new fluid as one would think.
Edit:Looks like that's why you can't find the ATE. FucKing government.

Yup, ATE had it right by making the TYP 200 in blue and clear/yellow so you could alternate between brake flushes and see visually when you had flushed all the old stuff out. Stupid DOT3 / DOT4 specs include color requirements though so you can't get the blue version any more. That said, you CAN get ATE TYP 200 by the can, about the best stuff out there especially when it comes to resisting picking up moisture over time.
Josh, I thought for sure you'd have a case of each imported from Mars, or a secret recipe to color your own.

Reading the first post I immediately thought Josh will know this.
jasnmar, I have been using ATE TYP 200, incase you were curious. I did not have the forward thought to buy the super-blue when I had the chance.
It does help get a lot of the water out though.

I concur wholeheartedly. Few people change the brake fluid often enough on their vehicles. I was only stating that seeing the color change at the bleeder may not indicate that it's as good as can be for air purging.

You just reminded me it's time to do mine again on the GL.
The factory fluid was amber. The first swap I just bought the local clear stuff. Being both old and amber I could tell the difference in old and new. With old vs. either clear or amber new stuff I'm not too confident, and with 7 bleed points I need all the advantage I can get.
Looks like as good a post as any to ask this question so here goes.......
When people "flush their brake fluid" how many actually take the time to push the pistons back into the calipers to push the old/dirty fluid out of the caliper and out the bleeder screw to ensure that all the fluid, or as much as possible, is changed out?
With the nature of how hydraulics work if the method I have seen used by most people is used, build pressure with the lever and crack the bleeder that is above the level of the fluid in the caliper, it is only the line that is being flushed. The crappy dirty brake fluid in the calipers just sits there and isn't truly flushed out. Sure, maybe a little will get cleared out with this method but the majority of the fluid in the caliper is never touched. That being said, I'm not too sure just how large a volume of fluid is in the caliper but I was curious so I figured I'd ask the question.

Sunday I had wedges of wood driven between the pads, calipers off the rotor. Naturally this meant getting the calipers oriented such that the bleeder was at the top was difficult. I was not able to get a solid bleed this way and wound up remounting the calipers and bleeding again. Although I am confident I flushed the whole system pretty completely. ... I think.
I panic bought a case of the blue stuff before the ban.
Wish I had.......

If I'm not mistaking some trackday orgs banned them too because of the color

Good to see at least a couple of other people have thought about getting the junk fluid out of the caliper. Apparently I am not as strange when it comes to these things as some would have me believe.......................
youre supposed to change brake fluid?
When I start my KTM in the morning, rules are broken. Its inevitable...
