Just in case anyone finds this at another time, 5 minutes ago I just tried using a piston ring compressor to take the oil filter off my sister's FZ6 and it worked like a charm!
First time trying this method and it ended up working great so I figured it was post-worthy.

If I could keep the handle on the filter clamp straighter, it would do more twisting and less denting/pushing...
