2002 GSX-R 600 with 33k miles, PCIII, and never checked valves.
the map was done years ago at RJ's in NH.
this morning i'm getting a bad front vibration at 10k+ RPM in 4th, and 8.5k+ in 5th and 6th.
possibilities:
- map went bad (but unlikely)
- injectors clogged
- front wheel balance
- dirty air box
- dirty spark plugs
- valve clearance?
i could run an injector cleaner in my next fill up. if that doesnt help, then i could take off the upper & lower injectors to a cleaning service.
if the front tire wasnt balanced properly, wouldnt that vibration happen at all RPM ranges or speeds?
would a bad valve gap cause a vibration at a high RPM?
any other ideas/possibilities this might be?
my vote is spark plugs
Under higher loads, a weak spark will fail.
My vote is to launch that POS off of a cliff or bridge.

Swap plugs and for god sakes check the valves. I'd check the airbox as well. My SV was FILLED to the brim with dog food last time we had a cold spell.

If it's a tire balance, it can happen at a certain speed... But it would be regardless of RPM. So if you go X speed and get the vibration... Then shift two gears but stay at the same speed... That will determine if it's tire related.
Power off. Take battery off. Reinstall. Turn on.
warped front rotor / rotors
Scalloped tire and or wheel/steering bearing possibly. Easy to check at least

Do you notice the vibration at other times of the day? Like, say...At your desk? While filling your face with Chipotle? Watching tv?
I'm just trying to isolate where the strange vibration is coming from.

One other thing to check: Look for a broken or loose engine mount bolt. The engine is a stressed member of the fame assembly and if it's not secure, it can act like a tuning fork and set up a sympathetic vibration at certain RPMs/loads.
please update us when you figure out what it was, I keep checking this thread and keep getting blueballed. Im curious what it was.
put a new chain on a few weeks ago and finally rode to work today. the vibration was coming from a kink in the chain. it's smooth as buttah now.
feels like my front tire is slightly out of balance now, but i've got another set to put on next time i go to the track.
and you put the chain on all by yourself![]()
