WD40 is an expensive way to clean a chain, Kerosene is cheaper AND what most manufacturers recommend
if its not spinnin freeley and sprocket teeth are visibly worn replace and as allready recommended, replace everything
chains & sprockets last anywhere from 5000 to 60,000 miles or more depending on yer riding style, environmental conditions and maintenance
I run a scottoiler with ATF and a 530 chain instead of the stock 525 chain on my V-strom
front sprockets gets replaced about every 20k-25k, chain & rear sprocket every 45k-50k
I know, that goes against the recommendation of replacing everything at once
most people wear everything evenly, fer some reason, my ridign style, I chew thru front sprockets compared to chain & rear sprocket
its not that wd40 is horrible, its just not ideal really. fine to spray on and wipe off, but horribly expensive to do so. then again, its easy, and you'd have to set a spray bottle with kero, though kero works better, or diesle
wd40 I think is fine.
It has a light oil that evaporates and leaves a waxy deposit. On very fine mechanisms its not recommended because the "oil" has gone away and the waxy stuff holds dirt particles.
On a MC chain thats fine
The best would be rear end lube 90 or 120 wt high sulphur gear lube but it stinks and makes a mess
funniest part about mc chains is that they are smart enough to include a full coverage and often enclosed chain guard on scooters, but can't seem to make the leap that it would be good on full size bikes
