Before you limit your year range, have you checked with Spears/etc to see if the later year engines are viable donors? I can't find any references to any major updates between the years other than lower compression on some later ones. (Good news, you're allowed to toss the OEM pistons for TT.)

Did you try Argo? Keep in mind that they sold the engine out of my wrecked ZRX as coming from a "great, undamaged" bike.......

eBay has motors starting at $750 shipped. Quick look at Argo shows whole bikes starting at $1900. No good deals on craigslist either.
