Food in New York City

Headed to New York City next weekend to eat.

Really, that is the entire reason. My wife and a friend of mine are going to see a show on Broadway on Sunday afternoon, but my other buddy is coming too. So the 4 of us are headed down Friday evening, have a couple hotel rooms and I don't give a shit about touristy stuff. I just want to eat.


Here are the places I've been aiming to get to that define NYC gastronomy.

Gray's Papaya for a dog and a papaya drink
Katz's Deli for the pastrami
Lombardi's for an authentic slice of pie
Peter Lugers/The Palm for grass fed dry aged steak


I'm also looking to find a GOOD falafel place, indian place, perhaps some sort of oriental place.

Recommendations please, including those I may of missed!

If you are not a foodie, please, go drink a DD coffee thinking it's good and leave your garbage out of this thread. Like Oreo said, this thread is serious business! (joking, but I'm a huge foodie, keep that in mind)

Nobu is good. You can get into Nextdoor Nobu without reservations, but there's sometimes a wait. It's pricey, but really good food. It's fusion - Peruvian and Japanese or something. I had something called creamy spicy shrimp tempura and I've craved it ever since. Is was insanely good. At the regular Nobu you can bump into celebrities a lot. If that's your thing.

To me katz's in a must. But if you are only going once you have to bring an empty stomach, because you need to get one of each, and dog and a knish(sp).

Going to get flamed, but totally skip Lugar's and do the Homestead instead.

Definitely don't miss Katz's -- expensive, but it's the best pastrami in the world. But you might want to try Second Ave Deli as well. The pastrami's not as good (still excellent though), but it's a bit of a nicer sit-down restaurant with lots of kosher specialties on the menu.

New York Burger Company is a great place to stop for a quick lunch -- it's basically fast food, but the burgers are fresh, hand-formed, and outstanding.

If you want to go somewhere for a few drinks, try d.b.a. on First Ave -- incredible selection of beer, scotch, and other liquors.

There are also tons of great hole-in-the-wall neighborhood restaurants in Brooklyn and elsewhere. Superfine (near the base of the Manhattan Bridge) is worth checking out. Dumont's on Union Ave in Williamsburg has some great food too. There are plenty of other great spots in Williamsburg too, as long as you can deal with all the hipsters running around.

You could spend weeks eating your way through NYC without ever having a bad meal or visiting the same restaurant twice.

Some of the best pizza on the planet is Totonno's. They have locations in Manhattan now, but you really need to go to Coney Island for the real deal. I haven't had the versions from new locations. I've heard they're not quite as good.
KILLER Pakistani food at the Pakistani Tea House downtown. Ask any cab driver. They all know where it is :D

Keens is amazing, Frankie and Johnnies is excellent. Olives in the Weston is great. I have done the old walk down the street and pick a place and have yet to have a bad meal. There are so many places and so little time.

Joe's Shanghai in Chinatown... get the soup dumplings.

Barney Greengrass....somewhere on the West Side...amazing smoked whitefish and bagels, awesome spot for breakfast!

best, cheapest, quickest falafel I ever had

there's also an indian snack place next door (kati rolls) which rolls up some spicy mixed vegetables in some naan, but I've gotten mixed reviews about them. The street chicken and rice stands are also pretty good.
