new clutch for 2000 Eclipse GT
Does anyone know how difficult it is or could give me an idea how expensive it will be to have a reputable mechanic replace the clutch on a 2000 Eclipse GT 5 speed?
I have a fair amount of mechanical knowledge but have never replaced a clutch and I haven't bought the Eclipse manual...yet.
btw, it was my son who burned it out showing off to his girlfriend last summer. (I couldn't get mad cause I blew the engine on my Dad's car doing the same thing when I was his age and my Dad let me off pretty easy too.)

Its bullwork. Its not diffucult though. Just a lot of hard work. Good project and bonding opportunity. You would need floor stands, floor jack, and some basic handtools and a full day.

It'll take you a lot longer than 4 minutes... Buy the manual and see if you need to get the transmission out of the car, or if you need to pull the engine and transmission as a unit.
While you're in there take a good look at the flywheel and see if it needs attention.

I certainly will buy the manual and I have the tools.
Thank you all for the advice.

See if there is an eclipse forum and look there. The manual may say yank the engine but it's possible to do it in car. Vehicle specific forums are invaluable for that type of information.

Tips from experience (fighting them...). When you go to slide the input shaft into the splines of the clutch plate - Take the plugs out of the engine and find a convenient pulley (alt, power steering, cam, etc - worst case the main pulley) that you can get a ratchet on and turn over the motor. Or - put the transmission in gear, slide a halfshaft in and spin that. It's a lot less difficult than rocking the tranny back and forth hoping to get Yahtzee...

That makes sense, thanks

Most high quality clutches come with clutch alignment tools. Get one if it doesn't.

Www.newengdsm.org is a great resource for all things Mitsubishi. For tips on doing it yourself, or finding someone reputable to do it.
