When my old mower started spitting oil from the bottom of the block (25 year old craftsman rider I got for free) I did the math. Close to 2 acres of grass, 3 hours a week of my time ($10 an hour seems fair), a decent mower was going to run $2k to $3k.
A crew quoted me $40 each time for cutting, weed whacking, and clean up. The break even point is something like 10 years out. I go away on business - the lawn isn't waiting for me when I get back.

I had also weighed the option of a landscaper , it takes me 2hrs+ to do my yard , paying the land scapsers to do it is still less than me working those 2 hrs of OT instead , and as you say "its not waiting for you to do when you get home ".
obviously location is everything , I live out in the sticks and pay a crew to do 2+ acres of grass, my folks live in an upity little town and they pay the same for 1/2 and acre to get mowed .
